From the animation it seems more than metaphor --- The USA and Europe really are moving farther apart.

Very huge. And it was over 600 miles long.

Now imagine the San Andreas fault which is 800 miles long. The 1906 quake resulted from a relatively short area shifting about 20 feet. If the entire fault shifted 50 feet those old predictions about California falling into the ocean might not be so far-fetched.

Excellent find. The most instructive video I've ever seen on quakes. Except I would say the scale on property damamge they are using is a bit off. The World Series quake 6.9 and the Landers quake 7.3 caused huge property damage-- collapsed freeways, etc. Modern engineering can offer good protection up to a 7.0. After that, forget it.
