The United Nations has set a one-year deadline for Asian countries to install a tsunami early warning system even as it made an emergency appeal for $130 million for relief work in tsunami-devastated countries.

Sálvano Briceño, director of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR), has called for immediate work to install a tsunami early warning system in the Indian Ocean such as already exists in the Pacific.

Where the heck were they?

I saw Cliff May on one of the news nets yesterday asking that question. He said that the UN pays someone to check the level of the snowpack for Alpine ski resorts, but wouldn't ensure that there was a tsunami warning system in place for countries around the Indian Ocean?!

Judging by past UN resolutions they're going to need at minimum 11 more resolutions and ten years to get it done, and then they will complain about it.

U.N. priorities (in this case for luxury ski trips for dignataries) are obvious to everyone but the Left.

They'll put Kofi and the Norway delegate to go on TV and call them names. And be sure, they will make it out the the US is to blame.

The UN will have the nerdy looking british guy come out and blame President Bush and the United States because we didn't give the countries enough money to buy the equipment.

Well, I still haven't seen Annan's mug on the boob tune. Where the heck is he if face time is so important?

And note to the MSM: If you blotted your copybook with your recent election coverage, that's nothing compared to what you're doing now. But by all means keep digging.

Tell the US that they need to invade and impose a regime change.

I suspect that after this occurence that most of those Asian nations won't need much prodding from the UN or anybody else to get some kind of warning system in place.

It's just sad that it takes a tragedy like this to get their attention to a problem that has always existed.

A 15 minute warning could possibly have saved hundreds of lives and my understanding of tsunamis is that in some cases warnings are available hours before the tsunami actually hits land.

From what I understand, they did detect the possibility of a tsunami but didn't want to hurt the tourism industry so they purposefully didn't issue the warning.
