Too early to send DART team to Asia: officials (Canadian Forces)

OTTAWA -- Although Canada's military keeps an emergency response team on standby to help in international disasters, it isn't "the right tool" to help victims of a devastating Asian earthquake and tsunami, federal officials said Tuesday.

"It seems the DART is not the right tool at this time," Col. Guy Laroche of the Department of National Defence told a Media briefing three days after the crisis hit. Officials were responding to criticisms that the Canadian Forces Disaster Assistance Response Team hasn't yet been sent to the region devastated by an earthquake that triggered massive tidal waves on Boxing Day.

Officials said they're not ruling out sending the DART team, which sets up a mobile field hospital, at some point.

But information is still coming in from the region and as yet, no government there has made a formal request to Ottawa for such help, officials said.

They have to find their one doctor who is out on a fishing trip right now. Then, they have to fix that old truck, patch the old tents, and find where those WW2 morphine ampules are before they can send the six member DART team out.

What disaster does it take to send them. Oh I forgot the NHL is in the middle of a lockout and they are really busy with that tragedy

Oh someone hasn't sent them a "Pretty Please"

I may be wrong, but I suspect the Liberal "government's" chronic underfunding of the Canadian Forces has ALOT to do with this. Liberals, wherever they are, are a truly rotten and pathetic bunch.

They'll show up just when the HARD WORK is almost done and bitch about how they did not get their fair share of the credit...like France in WW2.

I'd plot a COUP to take power but really, why would ANYONE want Canada? Better to let them keep it so we have a lot to laugh at.

Are you suggesting we did not do our fair share of the hard work in WW2? It always amazes me how you bashers jump to conclusions based on a single article and post a pile of sarcastic irrelevant crap. Perhaps this mobile facility is not the right tool, all I know is that disaster relief has been commited is on the way and we do not jump up and down shooting off our mouths about it.

If this is what he is saying, then it's not worth arguing with him.
