L'Osservatore raps Israel for declining disaster relief
Vatican, Dec. 28 (CWNews.com) - The Vatican newspaper has denounced a decision by the Israeli army to deny emergency help to disaster victims in Sri Lanka.
Calling for "a radical and dramatic change of perspective" among people "too often preoccupied with making war," L'Osservatore Romano singled out Israeli military leaders for declining a request for emergency medical help. The Vatican paper observed that in what "should be a time for unconditional solidarity," some world leaders seem incapable of escaping a "small-minded approach that restricts their horizons."
The suffering caused by the tsunami has created "a mass of deaths, across borders," L'Osservatore observed. The fact that the devastation swept across different societies, cultures, and nations should help to reinforce the universal perspective, the paper suggested.
L'Osservatore Romano, in its front-page coverage dated December 29 (but published in the afternoon of December 28) aid that the death toll from the earthquake and tidal wave was likely to exceed 50,000, with many more thousands wounded and over 1 million left homeless.
In Sri Lanka, where 17,000 people died and 1 million were driven from their homes, President Chandrika Kumaratunga has declared a national day of mourning on December 31, and asked for commemorative services by all of the country's religious bodies.
I thought Israel's offer was refused, or at least scaled back to almost nothing by the Sri Lankan gov't?
I thought it was the other way around?
The Vatican is 180 degrees wrong on this, is issuing false press releases after misreading the news. Some Vaticanite is issuing this due to his dislike for Israel.
How much is the Vatican donating?
I thought it was the other way around?.....
Correct. This press release is based on misreading the news, jumping to conclusions based on a predisposition against Israel.
Did the author commit yet another journalistic false premise?
The Vatican is full of leftists, real hard-core ones. The disregard of truth and the hatred of Israel are as natural as breathing to leftists. Things are never going to improve in the Catholic Church until the leftists are dragged out, root and branch.
This link is useful about the CWS which carried this article. They seem like straight shooters and have no reason to twist what the L'Observatore Romano had printed.

Don't have a link to the article, but here's a link to the newspaper:

Vatican might want to read the BBC article...
Thanks!
My take is CWS translated from the Italian (the daily L'Osservatore seem to be only in Italian) and merely relayed what was in L'Osservatore. CWS will issue a correction when it wakes up. It might be a small internet operation. CWS seems to be well intentioned Catholics, same as you I presume.
another sad ping
