NAIROBI, Kenya — Hundreds of people died and entire villages and towns disappeared when tidal waves hit Somalia's coastline along its central and northeastern regions, a Somali presidential spokesman said Monday.

The waves, which hit on Sunday, were triggered by the 9.0-magnitude undersea quake centered off the Indonesian island of Sumatra, 4,500 kilometers (2,800 miles) away.

From further down in the article:

"Ismail said the worst affected coastlines were along the semiautonomous northeastern region of Puntland and the central regions of Mudug and Upper Shabelle."

That's too bad. Puntland and Somaliland broke away from the mess that became 'Somalia' in 1991, and actually have a shot at becoming viable nations, if only the world would recognize thier independence. It's unfortunate a tsunami set them back like this.

Let me correct myself - Puntland broke away in 1998. It stretches along the central Somali coast up to Somaliland, which takes up the top of Somalia. Mogadishu is in the far south.

If it rains in Kansas, hundreds of people die in Somalia.

Powder..Patch..Ball FIRE!

Tsunamis supposedly travel at 600 miles an hour, meaning it takes five minutes for one to travel 3000 miles after an earthquake.

Ummm... Better check your math... 3000mi/600mi.hr.=5 (hrs. not minutes)

Tsunamis supposedly travel at 600 miles an hour, meaning it takes five minutes for one to travel 3000 miles after an earthquake. There is no possible way to create an effective warning system for something that moves that fast.

May want to recheck your math (I've actually screwed up some math on some of these threads due to fatigue and such :-)

600mph is about ballpark for a commercial airliner. 3000 miles is from NY to LA. I don't remember flying coast-to-coast in 5 minutes.

Folks in Somalia had something like 6+ hours of potential warning time. In India and Sri Lanka they had 1 1/2 to 3 hours of warning. In Thailand they had a bit less than an hour.

Sorry, but I can't get on the sympathy frequency for any nation that drug dead American GI's down the street while hopping around like drugged out crackheads. I wish them worse.

My abacus says it should be 5 hours... not 5 minutes

What a terrible thing to say.

Do you wish similar harm on Iraqis because of what Saddam's thugs have done?

Somalia is a place where people die in large numbers due to the ineptness of the government. It would seem hypocritical to suddenly care about them because they died in a tidal wave.

"The ocean, and all the things in it, are not your friend."

. . .I think of the ocean as a 'friend' but one that requires the utmost respect - and a healthy fear; if you will; and a friend to avoid, if you have time for a choice. . .if a tsunami shows up. . .

Personally, I have more than a healthy fear. . .prefer waterways like the intercoastal - I like seeing land close by. . .and on both sides of the boat. . .if I have to be on one.

I agree with you completely...what's funny is that it seems some freepers have taken a liberal approach to the acceptance of varying or opposing opinions...they are being judgemental and childish...

On other threads I have expressed my desire to only send aid to those countries aiding us in the war on terror, let the UN help the others...

Our boys and girls are fighting on the front lines b/c some of these countries refuse to support us vs evil.

Although philosophically I understand what you're saying, I do have so much sadness today for all those poor people whose lives were destroyed by an unforeseen act of nature.

I was a Marine, serving with CENTCOM. I took a UN (Russian) AN-12 up from Mogadishu. This was during the hole Provide Home/Comfort/Relief debacle.

What are the odds that a single one of those Somalis (or former Somalis) had a part in the incident you mention? Your philosophy is to blame all for the actions of some?
