Was there any video taken of the tsumamis coming in? I don't believe this phenomenon has ever been caught on film before.

Then again, if you were around to videotape it, you probably didn't survive it.

Not necessarily: people who have been interviewed said they were lucky to be on the upper floors of buildings then it came through. I'd like to see video of a 30' wave washing through!

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING IN DIEGO GARCIA?

I have friends who are deployed in Diego Garcia, and I'm concerned about their status because of the earthquake to their east and resulting Tsunami, which, according to FOX NEWS' most recent report, has already claimed over 11,000 lives.

I have not been able to make contact with any of them. However, the last I was there with them we were living in tents and coms were difficult.

Has anyone been in recent contact with US military personnel who are on Diego Garcia? If so, what is their status?

This is so awful. For every person who died, there must be hundreds who have had their lives severely disrupted. Prayers for these good people.

Christians are less than 20% of the population of Kerala. Hindus are about 60% and Muslims are over 20%.

I mentioned the fact because the comments up until mine were about pictures of tsunamis, facts about tsunamis, etc, but ignored the human toll. Why you chose to misinterpret my offhand comment about the fact that most Keralans (along the coast) are Christians, I don't know.

Protestant? I might be a curse of the lowland geography of the place. On the CA coast, for example, even the low freeway dip on the coast (highway 1) is probably 50ft or more above sea level at the road's lowest point. Even Pacifica and the west-side of San Francisco quickly climb in altitude as you move away from the beach. And you can occasionally get forty foot waves that completely restructure the beaches. But that's it. I wonder if it's similar to Venice, and what would happen if a fifty foot wave broke there? They're saying it was only forty feet in breaking, by the way, not that it approached at forty feet. Out this way, once rolling on an increasingly shallow bottom, a forty foot swell/wave would rise to 60-80 feet, which would be a BIG wave.

Prayers must go out to these poor folks. You do have to wonder if a sea wall couldn't be built, however, or that they relocate living quarters to hills nearby, and only go to work down in the dangerous lowlands? Again, I don't know the area.

Unbelievable. I saw this on Breaking News on CNN International last night in my hotel room in Mexico, where they interrupted their all "hate-America fest" to bring some actual news.

They reported 9 dead, and I told my family it would be more like 9000 dead.

I underestimated.
