Tsunamis hit south India; over 1,800 dead

More than 1,800 people were feared killed and hundreds more went missing when tsunamis triggered by a massive earthquake -- the biggest in four decades at 8.9 on the Richter scale, according to the US Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Centre -- near the Indonesian islands of Sumatra slammed into the southern peninsular coast of India on Sunday morning.

Note: The toll is likely to change as the situation develops.

At least 1,500 died in Tamil Nadu alone as the waves swept through the coastal areas, bringing in their wake death and destruction.

In Nagapattinam district, around 700 people died, followed by Kanyakumari (250) and Cuddalore (200).

A scene from Chennai's Marina Beach (Photo credit STR/AFP/Getty Images)Around 125 perished in the state capital of Chennai. Morning walkers on Marina Beach and residents in the Foreshore Estate slums almost abutting the sea got a rude shock when waves leaping up to 30-40 ft crossed the beach and slammed into the houses nearby, catching people unawares. Most of the victims were women and children who could not get out of the way.

The second unit of the Madras Atomic Power Station at Kalpakkam was shut down after water entered the plant.

About 500 tourists were stranded

at the Vivekananda Rock Memorial in Kanyakumari following the tremors. Helicopters from nearby Thiruvananthapuram were pressed into service to rescue them.

In Pondicherry, at least 102 deaths were reported.

At least 86 people were killed and hundreds injured in Kerala's southern districts. Kollam district recorded the most number of deaths (67) followed by Alappuzha (16).

Hundreds of people were injured as seawaters entered houses and fishing hamlets.

Andhra Pradesh reported 52 deaths -- Home Minister Shivraj Patil put the figure at somewhere close to 200 -- mostly in Guntur, Prakasam and Krishna districts. The state government announced a relief of Rs 100,000 each to the next of kin of dead.

The waves also hit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, whose Car Nicobar Islands are just 115 nautical miles from Sumatra. Twenty people -- including 10 at the Indian Air Force base -- died.

Campbell Bay, just about 25 nautical miles off the Indonesian coast, suffered extensive damage.

The fate of 45,000 people in an area between Car Nicobar Island and Greater Nicobar Island remained unknown.

Communication links were completely snapped in the islands.

One person lost his life in West Bengal.

Shocked over the scale of the disaster, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh assured the affected states and Union territories of all possible assistance.

He also despatched Patil, Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar and Communication Minister Dayanidhi Maran to the affected areas to help monitor the situation.

The Centre's Crisis Management Group met and drew up an emergency plan to carry out relief and rescue operations.

The army, air force and navy launched massive rescue and relief operations, pressing helicopters, transport aircrafts and ships along the eastern coastline and in island territories to search for the dead and trapped.

This is the first time India has been hit by tsunamis, which are triggered by seismic disturbances -- coastal earthquakes, volcanic eruptions or undersea landslides -- that jolt the ocean floor. The result is a deep wave that stretches from the sea's surface to the floor and travels horizontally at speeds of up to 800 km/hr and rises between 50 and 100 ft.

The earthquake and the resultant waves did not spare Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Maldives, too.

Over 2,400 people were killed when tsunamis pounded more than half of Sri Lanka's coastlines.

There were 1,032 fatalities in Batticaloa district alone, according to reports. In Trincomalee, there were reports of 320 deaths. The Galle tourist resort reported around 200 deaths.

Around 200 prisoners escaped when waves swept away a prison in Matara, in southern Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan officials imposed a curfew as night fell, and tourists were being evacuated from the eastern coast to the capital, Colombo.

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse urged India to provide urgent medical assistance to his country and help with helicopters in the rescue mission.

India agreed and sent two naval ships to Galle, in the south, and Trincomalee. Indian aircraft will bring in relief supplies to the country on Monday.

The quake and the waves that followed killed over 1,800 people in Indonesia. Many of the fatalities were in the troubled Aceh region.

In southern Thailand, some 400 were killed on the island of Phi Phi. The tourist resort of Phuket witnessed 48 deaths.

Twenty-eight deaths were also reported from Malaysia's Penang Island.

A state of emergency was sounded in Thailand and Sri Lanka.

Was there any video taken of the tsumamis coming in? I don't believe this phenomenon has ever been caught on film before.

Then again, if you were around to videotape it, you probably didn't survive it.

Remember the cameraman who shot video of the Mt. St Helens eruption from a nearby (miles away) peak. He didn't make it.

Not necessarily: people who have been interviewed said they were lucky to be on the upper floors of buildings then it came through. I'd like to see video of a 30' wave washing through!

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING IN DIEGO GARCIA?

I have friends who are deployed in Diego Garcia, and I'm concerned about their status because of the earthquake to their east and resulting Tsunami, which, according to FOX NEWS' most recent report, has already claimed over 11,000 lives.

I have not been able to make contact with any of them. However, the last I was there with them we were living in tents and coms were difficult.

Has anyone been in recent contact with US military personnel who are on Diego Garcia? If so, what is their status?

Thanks,

TheRaven

This is so awful. For every person who died, there must be hundreds who have had their lives severely disrupted. Prayers for these good people.

BTW, most of the people of Kerala are Christians, I believe.

Christians are less than 20% of the population of Kerala. Hindus are about 60% and Muslims are over 20%.

Not that it matters, of course. My prayers are with all. Maybe yours aren't, seeing as how you felt the need to point out a fictional fact as irrelevant as that.

I mentioned the fact because the comments up until mine were about pictures of tsunamis, facts about tsunamis, etc, but ignored the human toll. Why you chose to misinterpret my offhand comment about the fact that most Keralans (along the coast) are Christians, I don't know.

Protestant? I might be a curse of the lowland geography of the place. On the CA coast, for example, even the low freeway dip on the coast (highway 1) is probably 50ft or more above sea level at the road's lowest point. Even Pacifica and the west-side of San Francisco quickly climb in altitude as you move away from the beach. And you can occasionally get forty foot waves that completely restructure the beaches. But that's it. I wonder if it's similar to Venice, and what would happen if a fifty foot wave broke there? They're saying it was only forty feet in breaking, by the way, not that it approached at forty feet. Out this way, once rolling on an increasingly shallow bottom, a forty foot swell/wave would rise to 60-80 feet, which would be a BIG wave.

Prayers must go out to these poor folks. You do have to wonder if a sea wall couldn't be built, however, or that they relocate living quarters to hills nearby, and only go to work down in the dangerous lowlands? Again, I don't know the area.

Unbelievable. I saw this on Breaking News on CNN International last night in my hotel room in Mexico, where they interrupted their all "hate-America fest" to bring some actual news.

They reported 9 dead, and I told my family it would be more like 9000 dead.

I underestimated.

the population distribution in Kerala is more like 54% Hindus & 46% minorities(about 22% being Christian).
