WASHINGTON - President Bush faces a major rebellion within his own party if he follows through on a promise to push legislation that would offer millions of illegal immigrants a path to U.S. citizenship.
Almost no issue divides Republicans as deeply....

IMO this is an issue that divides the majority of ALL Americans from the policies of leaders of both parties, not just Republicans. Again, IMO, a solution that reflects this fact is urgently needed.

PING
MSM Media tries to present this as a GOP vs W issue when it is far, far more than that.

Like I have stated here many times, nobody of either party has done anything to stem the flood of illegals flowing into our country!

"Like I have stated here many times, nobody of either party has done anything to stem the flood of illegals flowing into our country!"
And neither party will do anything. The outflow of money from the U.S. is necessary to keep our economy afloat.
The concept of the word "float" is the key issue here...
With every Mexican paycheck that is converted to a southbound Money Order, a little bit of our inflation exits the country and becomes less noticeable to the citizens of the US.
If our excess cash remained within the boundaries of the US, we would have runaway inflation.
Ignoring immigration is a clever diversion to keep the citizens ignoring the inflation caused by the floodgate policy of money printing that is giving the appearance of a stable US Monetary system.
This is the same underlying issue that has forced the US to run constant and accelerating trade deficits.
Our number one export is inflation; riding out of town on the payments for imported goods.

"The MSM is full of S**T!" I agree with these sentiments re: MSM but simply shouting against the MSM is to ignore the underlying problem that the MSM seeks to harvest.
Every poll I have seen on the subject of immigration indicates that the LARGE MAJORITY of all Americans of either Party DO NOT want amnesty, DO NOT want legalization in terms of drivers licenses, etc and DO want an end to unchallenged and uncontrolled illegal entry. I think any legislation that does not reflect these preferences will cause problems for whoever supports them, Dem or Rep

The guest worker program will only exacerbate the Social Security problem.
One of the reasons employers hire illegals is to avoid having to pay S.S. FICA (and Worker's Comp). Unless guest workers are exempted from collecting on SS benefits, they will then add to its growing deficit. My understanding is that guest workers will be eligible for S.S. after only 18 months of paying into the system, even if they never become a citizen.
And of course, there will still be employers hiring illegals under the table, so they can cut labor costs.

All correct. The whole situation is untenable.

President Bush faces a major rebellion within his own party
no issue divides Republicans as deeply
It shouldn't deeply divide and the rebellion should happen if GWB ignores the masses and trods ahead.
Polls show up to 80% of Americans say NO to illegal immigration and also say NO to amnesty for illegal. The citizenry's opposition to illegal immigration is neither a Democrat nor Republican issue; it is an American issue. Hillary Clinton is one of the first to publically voice opposition. Good for her! If she continues her opposition, and GWB pushes through amnesty, look for Dems to start picking up votes, possibly big wins in 2006 and 2008.

I doubt it will take 20 years to look like and be a 3rd world country.
One of the major reasons Bush won't do anything the majority of us want and EXPECT him and or the GOP to do is because, like the slimey libs they are :
"As a presidential candidate, both in 2000 and 2004, Bush eagerly courted Hispanics, the fastest-growing ethnic group in the electorate.
We will keep working to make this nation a welcoming place for Hispanic people, a land of opportunity para todos (for all) who live here in America, Bush told the League of United Latin American Citizens last summer."
Pretty digusting when a party will sell out to the highest bidder to get elected, and sell out our COUNTRY!! Does the GOP really beleive they cant win without the hispanic vote? Do they really want votes cast by ILLEGALS???????

RUTHERFORD INSTITUTE.COM ^ | DECEMBER 13, 2004 | JOHN W. WHITEHEAD As an American, I have always been inspired by the fact that my country welcomes those who seek refuge. And as long as our government officials maintain our borders and ensure that those coming from other countries are screened in order to protect those who legally live here, the concept of welcoming immigrants is a noble one. However, something has gone awry. Indeed, illegal immigration into the U.S. has become an immense problem and a clear and present danger. Documented illegal immigration has more than doubled in the last decade. It has grown, by conservative counts, from 3.5 million in... |

At what cost are we suppose to keep our economy "afloat"? At the cost of being overrun by invaders that threaten our way of life? I think the damage done by these invaders far outweighs any benefit to the economy they might bring.
If our economy is in trouble, they should fix what is wrong, rather then give free reign to illegals within our country as a means to keep that screwed up economy 'afloat'.
To: TomGuy
"The citizenry's opposition to illegal immigration is neither a Democrat nor Republican issue; it is an American issue. Hillary Clinton is one of the first to publicly voice opposition. Here, Here. But the Hillary gambit is just a cynical political ploy to capitalize on any possible rift. I just hope W, who I support on almost every other matter, comes around on this issue. To do otherwise is a losing proposition and takes control of the debate out of Rep hands and into the Dems who will demagogue it to death.
