Afghan and coalition troops capture Taliban suspects; attack leaves two dead

Afghan troops captured 10 suspected Taliban fighters in a raid on their hideout in southern Kandahar province following an attack against a local police chief that left two people dead, the governor's spokesman said Friday.

The raid occurred Wednesday on a mountain road in Miyanashi, north of the city of Kandahar, said Khalid Pashtun, a spokesman for the governor. He said the 10 rebels were overwhelmed by about 80 Afghan soldiers and gave up without a fight.

The raid followed an attack in the area on Miyanashi's police chief, Khadr Jan, whose convoy was ambushed as he traveled along the same road. A soldier guarding Jan was killed in the attack, as was one Taliban fighter. Two other soldiers are missing.

The Taliban has kept up a steady drumbeat of attacks since it was ousted in 2001, but the level of fighting has dropped in recent weeks, in part due to the onset of winter.

The rebels were unable to carry through on their threats to disrupt October elections or the inauguration earlier this month of Hamid Karzai as Afghanistan's first democratically elected president, leading to speculation they are in decline.

Meanwhile in neighboring Zabul province, coalition forces on Wednesday captured seven other Taliban fighters, including Ahmadullah, a local commander, according to Gov. Khial Mohammed Hussaini. Details of the clash were not immediately clear.

Ahmadullah is considered one of the top two Taliban leaders in Zabul province, but is not in the inner circle of Taliban leader Mullah Omar.

Ahmadullah is considered one of the top two Taliban leaders in Zabul province, but is not in the inner circle of Taliban leader Mullah Omar.

Someone is making an effort to take down the Tailb leadership. I wonder are we witnessing Task Force 121 in action.

This is how they got Saddam....start in the outer ring of his circle and keep peeling off people.....and they give you someone in the inner circle.....until they get the big guy.

I think they are after Mullah Omar.

From the Daily Telegraph:

AN Afghan soldier and a Taliban militant have been killed during a failed attempt to assassinate a local police chief in southern Afghanistan.

Insurgents on Wednesday ambushed the police chief of Maineshan district as he was travelling to Kandahar city, killing one soldier and leaving two missing, Kandahar provincial spokesman Khalid Pashtun said today.

"After this attack 50 soldiers went on a search operation to the area of the fighting to find the Taliban.

"Government soldiers arrested 10 Taliban with their motorbikes and weapons."

The body of a Taliban fighter was left at the scene after the attackers fled, Mr Pashtun said.

They've grown accustomed to it.

BTW, have you read the Robin Moore book The Hunt for Bin Laden? Really some great stuff about our specwarriors fighting in Afghanistan.
