It's like the distinction between "ship" and "boat". How big does a sail boat have to be before it becomes a ship?
A friend of mine is buying a 118' sail boat.
He didn't know the answer.

At 118' it might be a sailing ship. If it was 118", then sailboat would be fine.

A sailing vessel having three or more square-rigged masts. Does he have three or more square-rigged masts? Otherwise, it's just a boat.
