Former Mayor Wellington Webb formally announced his candidacy Thursday to become chairman of the Democratic National Committee (news - web sites).

Webb's interest in the job was widely known; he made a pitch to the committee on Dec. 10 in Orlando, Fla.

"I am running because I believe this historic election for chair will determine the future of our party," Webb said.

Webb was mayor from 1991 to 2003 after serving as a state legislator and Denver city auditor.

Others interested in the Democratic chairmanship include former presidential candidate Howard Dean (news - web sites); former Michigan Gov. Jim Blanchard; defeated Rep. Martin Frost (news, bio, voting record) of Texas; and Harold Ickes, who was an adviser to former President Clinton (news - web sites).

The current chairman, Terry McAuliffe, is not seeking another term.

Hopefully he runs the DNC as poorly as he ran Denver.

This guy is scary. He's a major antagonist in the belief there is a republican conspiracy to deny the black vote, from an interview on CSPAN, thinks the FBI was republican controlled at the time of the King assasination and may have had something to do with it. Seems to fit right in with the Move-on crowd.

Don't worry, he's black. The democrats had their one token black, Ron Brown, already. No, the good little dark ones should calm down and let the Dr. take over.

Is this the guy who gave the parking concession at the Denver airport to his brother-in-law, or some such corruption?

Is he also the same guy who would not allow Christian floats in the CHRISTmas parade, recently? Well, until the people of Denver raised a BIG stink about it. Maybe that was another Denver mayor?

If the DNC wants and anti-Christian at their helm, great!

No, the idiot that would not allow CHRISTmas floats is John Hickenlooper. Webb was the mayor before him.

Honestly, this couldn't get much better. The DNC will be shooting itself in the foot.

"Honestly, this couldn't get much better."

Oh, but it could. Dean could get the job. Or Dean could not get the job and create his own splinter faction. Or Ickes could get the job and be more irritating than McAwful.

He's from the "let's be more liberal" crowd. Webb would be a good choice - for us.
