Imus blasts Santorum over paltry death benefits (Summary)
16 December 2004 | Racehorse

Posted on 12/16/2004 4:52:07 AM PST by Racehorse

Only caught part of an Imus interview with Senator Rick Santorum on this morning's show. Santorum was telling Imus Congress had doubled the death benefit from $6,000 to $12,000. Imus told him that was, in effect, a disgraceful joke. Santorum tried to bolster Congress' alleged support for GIs by listing other survivor benefits, each of which Imus appropriately and accurately mocked. Santorum, seemingly defensive, then pledged to "try" to do more in next year's military appropriation bill.

Might be helpful, if you agree with Imus, to fire off an email to your Congress people.

SGLI was $100,000 when I was in over 10 years ago. Has it disappeared?

Make that the "Defense Authorization Bill."

Imus ended the interview by telling Santorum something really needed be done, that we'd see whether or not Santorum was somebody with some juice, or a Senator who really belonged in the House. Imus told Santorum he'd be bringing the subject up each time the Senator appears on his show.

One Imus rant I think he did with the angels on his side.

We had 8700 active duty deaths during the Clinton dark years, and the lower death benefit, military pay and VA budget wasn't a problem for the liberals.

Imus has been harping on this today (I agree the lump sum settlement should be higher) since the issue he has harped
on for weeks, the lack of gym equip, was disputed by Chris Matthews this AM.

I just sent Imus an e-mail asking him about converting his retirement home that donors built for him into a rehab center
for Iraqi War vets missing limbs.

I dont think so, both my boys carry life insurance coverage with the military for $250,000. I believe the $6000 is what the govt covers at no charge to them

Isn't there a specific life insurance policy they can get while active duty?

Will their spouses and dependents receive any long term benefits?

It is a shame that they aren't paid more, but I just don't know all the details. I know there are orgs which help the children of fallen soldiers attend college, I'm sure there are others.

"SGLI was $100,000 when I was in over 10 years ago. Has it disappeared?"

No. In 2003 it was raised to $250,000 with a 25% lower premium. The new rate also added free $10,000 coverage for servicemember's children and a very low priced spousal coverage.

Imus has a point when he says that the amount is paltry, but he needs to lay the hell off of Santorum.

$250,000 dollars for $20.00 per month. Imus doesn't bother
to mention this or the fact that surviving spouse and kids receive
full monthly benefits, same as Social Security.

That would be a gread idea. He might do it, or at least have groups of wounded Vets come to the ranch like the groups of sick children do.

He or Santorum did mention the $20/250,000 option.

No the grandstanding jerk has managed to acquire a retirement
home for himself.

Imus is phony as a three dollar bill.

Oh, yeah: THAT'LL go over big. :) Then again, maybe he'll HAVE a couple dozen of them out there every year, for a couple of weeks, to let them ride the horses, and find some way to scam even more for himself from donors.

I don't believe so, but Imus's problem is that the soldiers have to pay a 20 dollar monthly premium in order to get it. If they don't participate, they won't get it.

Average burials are about $6,000 and the govt has raised that to $10k which was meant to cover burial costs, plus as others have mentioned there are life insurance policies available for $250,000.

You folks really should try to get over it. He is doing good things and he is doing them within the law. I'm sure if Roger Ailes carried Imus, many around here would change their tune.

Imus and you should find out who voted against defense spending and direct your anger towards them. I'll bet most of them are RATs.

I actually voted for before I voted against isn't helping our troops!

Imus has more money than he knows what to do with. He should put up some instead of flying off to London on his private jet or just shut up about things he knows little about.
