which is divided over whether the Lubavitcher founder, Rabbi Menachem Schneerson, is alive or dead.
I can't believe they haven't sorted that out. He's been dead for 10 years.

In contrast to this fringe element, many other followers of Lubavitch Hassidism consciously try to keep their deceased leader's words alive by speaking of him and his pronoucements in present tense, as one refers to great thinkers and philosophers of the past, e.g. "Socrates says," "Jesus says," etc. It seems a little odd to choose this mode in refering to someone so recently deceased, but as time passes, the practice will seem quite normal. Rabbi Menachem Schneerson was indeed a wise man, well educated both religiously and secularly (he graduated from the Sorbonne). He wrote a huge number of responsa in many volumes, which remain as interpretive source material on all manner of issues and questions.

I know an Orthodox Jewish woman who follows the Lubavitcher movement. I wonder what her take on all this is.
