SAN FRANCISCO -- An unusually smooth and swiftly growing lava dome within the crater of Washington state's Mount St. Helens volcano is an extraordinary and perplexing event with an unknown outcome, geologists said Tuesday.

When Mount St. Helens blew its top in 1980, it left a mile-wide crater. Over the next six years, a dome of lava built up in the middle of the crater. Then the volcano went quiet. The dome became partly buried by a glacier that's more than 600 feet deep in places.

Funny, I thought all glaciers were melting away worldwide. That's what the new 'National Geographic' has been telling all society members in at least 2 articles in every issue this year. But here is a 600 ft thick glacier that has grown inside a live volcano the last 24 years.

Some process build the near perfect cone to begin with. Why can't that process be at work now?

I've walked over hardened lava before. Wears your shoes out fast by the way.

That won't wear shoes, that melts shoes, then the flesh and bones.

Slightly different than walking on sandpaper like dried lava.

"event with an unknown outcome"

Hydrostatic plug. That is why there is a volcanic mountain there, to plug the upward pressure of the lava.

Freepmail me as to where to send my check.

Then why not just drive over it like Pierce Brosnan did in Dante's Peak? It didn't melt his rubber tires. (wink-wink)

I don't have a non-explosive gas tank and non-burnable rubber gas lines like he had, that's why.

I don't see where you could hide a 600 ft thick glacier in this picture. Looks like snow covered rocks to me.
