Fewer teens are engaging in sexual activity than in the past, and those that do are more likely to use contraceptives, the government said Friday.
The National Center for Health Statistics said that for girls aged 15 to 17 the percentage who had ever had intercourse declined from 38 percent in 1995 to 30 percent in 2002.
For boys, the agency said, the decline was 43 percent to 31 percent.
''There is much good news in these results,'' Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson said in a statement. ''More teenagers are avoiding or postponing sexual activity, which can lead to sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancy or emotional and societal responsibilities for which they are not prepared.''
In addition, the agency said that when teens do have intercourse, 79 percent reported using contraception in 1991-2002 compared with 61 percent in the 1980's. The agency said the increase in contraception is consistent with a decline in teen pregnancy.
The report was based on data collected by the center, a part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth and the previous survey conducted in 1995.
While there was a drop in sexual activity at ages 15 to 17, the share of never-married females aged 18-19 who had ever had intercourse was 69 percent in 2002, up from 68 percent in 1995.
By contrast, for 18- and 19-year-old boys the share dropped from 75 percent in 1995 to 64 percent in 2002.
Teen girls' first sexual partners are most commonly boys one to three years older than they are, usually a steady boyfriend, the report said.

Thats because the guys are too stoned to get it up and the girls are too loaded to give a damn.
Bill Clinton hasn't been well.

Hey Kids! Want Good Sex? Try Abstinence.
The Story of how Social Policy Crept into a Sex Education Curriculum

The good news is also that kids are using birth control.
I am glad they are teaching that in the schools, cause many kids don't get the information at home. It would be better if they abstained until they were older, but they don't often so information is needed. I wonder if there were any studies which showed which kinds of sex education helped the children the most to make better decisions and which kind of education did not help them.
That depends on who you believe.
Well, unless you know every single person in your class really, really well, they might just be lying.
It's pretty common for teens (both boy and girls) to exaggerate their level of sexual experience. Then, too some might be engaging in oral sex but drawing the line at intercourse.
Interesting also that postponing sex for boys leads to them having much less sex. This indicates that women are the power brokers when it comes to negotiating the terms of sex. For the last 30 years we have been trying to get wormen to be more like men sexually; this has been bad for women in many ways: more std's, early pregnancy and single parenthood, and...it turns out that girls are less likely to enjoy sex during adolescence than are boys. Sex, in the context of a devoted loving relationship produces the most frequent and satisfying sex bot both sexes and women encourage such an arrangement naturally when they are not undermined by the popular culture.
ive seen most of them with condems among other things, but it might just be in my neck of the woods, i live down in liberal broward, florida so that could also be a reason.
WOW! Girls doing it more than boys!!!!!
Girls aged 18-19 having intercourse was 69 percent in 2002.
Boys aged 18-19 having intercourse was 64 percent in 2002.
Can this be true????
Well, condoms are easier to get a hold of than candy bars in a lot of places! Seriously, they are probably more like props than actually used and needed.
Let me put it to you this way - real life, card-carrying adults never get in situations where their contraceptive choice is "accidentally" put on display for their friends.
I'm not saying nobody is sexually active in your class, just that fewer people are probably doing it less often than you think. It's very common for a girl to go along with sex out of "love", have a devastating break-up and then opt out of the sex thing for years.
Yes, because women generally choose partners a few years older than themselves. Thus if the younger age group of girls are having less sex, it would follow that so are the slightly older group of boys.
Or at least talking about it to nosy researchers less. :)
The Time Machine, where the hell is the damned Time Machine!
you're probably right about condems being used as props, since you do find them all over the place..
Does this include oral sex? Some kids around here consider it an introductory remark...
Moral Absolutes Ping. In comment #5 there's a link to an article about abstinence I haven't checked out yet.
This article isn't all that encouraging, (if it's all accurate) since by the time girls are 18-19 two thirds or more have had sex. Supposedly it's "good" news that more teenagers are using contraceptives. So that means that more can have casual sex without any thought of responsibility, commitment, or marriage. Doesn't sound good to me.
A couple of thoughts - one of the reasons for so much teenage sex (certainly not a huge reason, but it counts for something) is the onus placed on early marriage in this country. Actually, the onus placed on marriage itself. Feminism has caused an incredible destruction, and is one of the root causes of the troubles teenagers are having now.
It's natural that girls and young women want marriage, a husband and children. They have been indoctrinated into the lie that being a loyal wife and loving mother is tantamount to a prison sentence. They have been indoctrinated that casual meaningless sex is liberating and enjoyable.
Need I say more?
Let me know if anyone wants on/off this pinglist.
