Oracle's Ellison taunts 49ers owners
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 12/9/4 | MICHAEL LIEDTKE

SAN FRANCISCO -- Oracle Corp. CEO Larry Ellison aimed his famously barbed tongue outside the technology industry Wednesday, taunting the owners of the San Francisco 49ers for refusing to sell the "worst team in football."

Ellison, renowned for ridiculing Oracle's rivals, made the off-the-cuff remarks in response to a question from a 49ers fan attending Oracle's annual customer conference in San Francisco. The fan, wearing a 49ers cap, asked Ellison -- one of the world's richest man -- to consider buying the NFL team.

Echoing remarks he made at Oracle's annual shareholder meeting in October, Ellison lamented that he can't acquire the 49ers because the owners -- Denise DeBartolo York and her husband, John York -- won't part with a once-proud franchise that is a league-worst 1-11 this season.

"That victory spoiled what could have been a perfect season," Ellison said sarcastically. "Clearly, it's the worst team in football."

Do you know what the difference is between God and Larry Ellison?

God doesn't think he is Larry Ellison.

The Niners are doomed unless the Yorks sell them or give them back to Denise's spendthrift brother Eddie. A couple more bad seasons, and the faithless trendoids that live in the Bayarrhea will abandon them like a bad Chardonnay.

As a lifelong 49er Faithful, I can think of only one thing worse than the York's keeping control of my beloved Niners, and that is Larry Elison taking control. BRING BACK EDDIE!

As a former "Oracle Widower" I find myself agreeing with The Larry for the first time.

[...] Bayarrahea [...]

First time I've heard that one. Priceless!

As long as we're into liberal scatology, the other nom-de "plume" is "Bayurea."

Lived here all my life.

All true, but he's still better than the Yorks.

Wasn't Eddie DB asked to divest of the team over some questionable deals he had going (outside of football)?

If I recall correctly, the man is a little too well 'connected' for the tastes of the NFL...

Absolutely. Ellison's ego wouldn't allow him to put a team like the current 49ers on the field. I have no idea why the Yorks are holding on to the team, when they clearly have no interest in making it successful.

Ellison might turn out to be football's answer to George Steinbrenner, but I guarantee any team he owned would win - and win big.

Those were the rumors...............

Of course, Eddie only wishes that he was as well "connected" as the average member of congress..............

Jumping in the way back machine we find:

"And finally, Eddie DeBartolo Jr., the former owner of the San Francisco 49ers football team, told the jury he gave Edwin Edwards $400,000 in cash in March 1997, after Edwards was out of office.

DeBartolo said he paid Edwards the money to keep the former governor from wrecking the chances of a partnership DeBartolo was part of that was trying to get a riverboat casino license."

Eddie won't be coming back. Between pay-offs to convicted felon politicians in LA and associates with gambling enterprises the NFL won't let Eddie DB see the light of day at the NFL owners group.

Whatever happened to Eddie DeBartolo? I lost track of him on the radar screen years ago...

Eddie D won't be back, but he certainly loved the game and loved the team. I can't say that about the Yorks.

I can't imagine that Ellison would be worse than the York's. At least he would spend some money. Apparently the Yorl's are petitioning the NFL to be able to pay players next year with cans of expired tuna from Costco.

10 years ago the 49ers were in the Superbowl against the Chargers which were dismissed by the announcer as "destined to be nameless and faceless" in the face of the 49ers before the game. Now the 49ers are 1-11 and the Chargers are atop their division.

If Ellison wants them team, give him a price and the damn team. He can't do much worse.
