Texas political sources believe that Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison definitely has decided to run in 2006 for governor, a job she long has coveted. That means challenging Gov. Rick Perry in the Republican primary.
Polls indicate that Perry is vulnerable in heavily Republican Texas, while Hutchison is the state's most popular political figure. If she runs for governor, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst is interested in succeeding her in the Senate.
According to Texas sources, Hutchison's running mate as lieutenant governor might be state Comptroller Carole Strayhorn. The former Democratic mayor of Austin, Strayhorn has been called the brains of the Texas Republican Party. She is the mother of two important Bush administration officials: White House press secretary Scott McClellan and Medicare chief Mark McClellan.

We're in deep doo-doo!
Perry should start thinking about running for the Senate.
Texas GOP brains Ping!
LtGen Ricardo Sanchez is a Texas native.. Sadly, he won't get his well earned 4th star becasue of attempts to smear him over the Abu Ghraib fix. IMHO, Sanchez should do a "Sessions"...retire, run for the Senate from Texas, and make life miserable for the Dems in the Senate..
I thought Gen. Sanchez was going to be my congressman in 2007!
I find Perry disappointing as a governor. There's not much in his record that would cause me to vote for him again.
I don't know anything about Strayhorn except that she was obviously at one time married to Barr McClellan, who published a book a couple of years ago that stated that LBJ had Kennedy killed.
I don't want Perry representing me as senator. As a politician, he's just a warm body and nothing more.
Anybody have thoughts on why Perry is allegedly vulnerable?
Also, is he likely to step aside if Kay Bailey Hutchinson enters the race? Or are we going to have a nasty primary fight?
Kay Bailey Hutchinson has always struck me as a moderate (although loyal) Republican. Could we end up with a battle between the moderate and conservative wings of the party? (particularly on social issues)
I once remember seeing Perry on a televangelist show (Daystar, I think) as I was channel surfing. I couldn't imagine Kay Bailey Hutchinson in that forum.
Perry strikes me as somebody with more appeal to the grass-roots conservatives in rural Texas, whereas Kay Bailey Hutchinson seems like somebody with more appeal in River Oaks or Turtle Creek.
So I think it could be a nasty fight, unless one party steps aside.
Good grief! Absolute nonsense.
No kidding, haven't liked her since she was mayor of Austin.
Perry is pathetic as governor. The only thing he seems to be interested in doing is converting our freeway system here in Texas to a toll road system - at close to 20 cents per mile. Now he wants to put transponders in our cars, so he can see when and where we drive - and tax us by the mile and the time of day. He must be stopped.
In 2002, I voted for a Democrat the first time in my life (for governor), and hopefully the only time - in a vain attempt to try to stop this madness.
I wish Kay and Carole the best - they will be doing Texans an HUGE favor if they knock off this idiot in the primary.
The former Democratic mayor of Austin, Strayhorn has been called the brains of the Texas Republican Party.
No kidding--that has to be the most absurd thing I've heard this month.
I guess people like Novak like Carol Keeton Mclellan Rylander Strayhorn Your Ad Here because she gives good theater and is willing to challenge Republican policies by acting like a Democrat. Texas doesn't need the likes of her in the top office. She'd singlehandedly undo 20 years of tough Republican reputation-building among Texans.
Perry should start thinking about running for the Senate.
She's a self-promoter, cultivates an image as "one tough grandma" then flies around the state attacking Republicans for not spending enough on health care an education. George W. Bush keeps hiring her useless kids for important jobs in the hopes she'll keep her mouth shut but it doesn't seem to work.
Last year, she spread rumors that Gov. Perry was gay and carrying on with the appointed Secretary of State and that was behind his divorce. All because she wants to push him out of the top office. Yes, that's a real constructive party-builder for you.
Had they not just announced the Longhorns first trip to the Rose Bowl recently, this news would have made my day.
No way Rick Perry gets my March vote. You can probably find plenty of threads on the subject around here if you do a little search, but to put it real simple:
1. He is not supporting conservative judges.
2. He is dividing the party. Not in any moral high ground either, but by maintaining petty grudges
"Last year, she spread rumors that Gov. Perry was gay and carrying on with the appointed Secretary of State and that was behind his divorce. All because she wants to push him out of the top office. Yes, that's a real constructive party-builder for you."
Nothing like a nasty primary fight to hurt the party in the general election. Fortunately, Texas is a very Republican state. If that kind of fight were happening here in the northeast, we would be throwing away the election.
Isn't Hutchinson pro-choice, as well? She kind of strikes me as a "country club Republican" type.
That being said, I wouldn't support tolls on the highways either, in response to another poster's criticism of Perry.
She sounds as nutty as her ex. I still don't know how Scott McClellan got his job. He sure doesn't strike me as the brightest bulb in the box.
Isn't Hutchison getting a bit long in the tooth for elected office?
