Chattanooga Housing Authority officials plan to install personal computers and high-speed Internet access in all of the public housing units at The Villages at Alton Park.
"We want young people in public housing to have the same access to technology as someone growing up in a middle class home," said John Hayes, deputy director of planning and development.
Housing officials will use a $250,000 Hope VI Neighborhood Network grant to provide the computers and unlimited Internet access for up to 200 public housing residents in The Villages for two years. After that, residents will have access to high-speed Internet services for about $10 a month.
The Villages site is part of a multiyear effort to revitalize Alton Park. Chattanooga was awarded a federal $35 million Hope VI grant to replace McCallie Homes, once the largest housing development in the city, with a 400-unit, mixeduse residential development on 52 acres.
When completed in 2006, The Villages will include 200 public housing units that will be available to residents who receive public assistance. In addition, there will 200 market-rate apartments, townhouses, duplexes and singlefamily homes for rent or purchase.
People not on public assistance who choose to live at The Villages will be able to buy a computer for their home at a discount as well, CHA officials said.

I want a pony.
My tagline is a real-life quote-
Wonder how many will be used to access porn? Your tax dollars at work...
I have a 1957 Pontiac in my garage that, for lack of funds, is awaiting a full body-off restoration.
Because I have, unfortunately, spent alot of money buying clothes, food, and paying a mortgage, I believe I'm experiencing emotional trauma. Every time I look at the Pontiac, I feel despair.
I wonder if there's any gummint money available so I can get started.
Once again, this lower middle class family is getting messed over. With property taxes running 1 1/2 month's pay and now this?!? We must budget to log on at 21,000 kbps.
That really makes me mad! I'd love to have a high speed connection but cannot afford it. Maybe I should whine to the government too.
Any bets on how many computers will still be there after 1 week?
If given a choice between broadband and HBO, which do you think these fine citizens would choose? (I know it is not fair to make them choose, so they will get both!)
I volunteer at a church run mission a couple days a week and you would be surprised at how many requests we get for large screen TVs and computers.
Get the shysters ready!! They'll be able to sue the begeezes out of the government when kids in the projects "get addicted" to internet poker/gambling and ring up thousands in debt. Sexual attacks can be forgiven if they are a result of "porn addiction" caused by the city government! Liberals NEVER consider the unintended consequences!
Some Freeper in the area needs to place a sign there about the hottest web site on the net: www.freerepublic.com. Maybe we could educate some minds of mush.
Well, lets see, first, they sue for the "addiction", then the government decides that since they own a piece of the internet, they can censor it. So, they start with eliminating porn. Then, hate speech. Then, evil right-wing political dissention. Perhaps they do see the consequences.

That Instant Messaging will come in handy for clandestine drug / prostitution deals.
I'm near Chattanooga and know the area. This will never work. Alton Park is a crime ridden ghetto. One of two things will happen immediately. The computers will be stolen or sold (or both) for drugs first thing. Second, the crack addicted, crack selling parent (there are never two) will be stoned or absent and the kids will be surfing the web checking out porn with their friends. One other thing could happen. A few will probably be taken out by the drive by shootings.
This really burns me. I work 10 1/2 hours a day four to six days a week in a factory to have what I have. We pay $60 a month for Satellite Internet and they get it for free?
Geez I hate freeloaders!
I want 40 acres and a mule.
YGBSM!
As long as you are wasting taxpayers money, why not put a Starbucks in each building and give subsidized lattes for $1.50.
Here's another: "A penny saved is a government oversight."
