I was in Punta Cana in 2002 at one of the all enclusives. It was very nice and reasonable. Food and drinks was everything they said it would be. Rooms were great and the beaches were great. Don't expect to run around the island because it probably isn't safe, but just stay at your all inclusive and your fine. Look to apple or others for good prices.
I too went to Playa Dorado but stayed at the Paradise Beach Club. The whole area was basically gated and therefore seemed a little secure. If you are into mingling with the locals its not great but there were decent restaurants, a casino and most resorts had some sort of sharing arrangement where you could use their facilities. I'm a pool and bar guy and found it quite enjoyable. The beach was ok but not the classic blue/green of say Cancun. I found service pretty good at my resort. It was at the time 4 stars and the food was good. I especially liked being able to eat on my schedule rather than the resorts since they had various eateries open around the resort. If you are into golf there was a course within the PD area.
There, I said it. :)

check out casa de campo in la romana, dr. all inclusive with 3 great golf courses. best place in the caribbean. been there twice - at the father in law's expense.
I have been to the DR several times and Punta Cana twice. My wife and I both highly recommend Paradisus. It is all-inclusive, has several excellent restaurants, all the water activities you could wqant, a wonderful swimming pool, excellent staff, all you can drink cold running Heniken beer if you want. The beach is beautifual and security is well taken care of, but unobtrusive. The rooms we have had were very nice with great maid service-even Hibiscus on the pillows and chocolate. Well worth the money. One of the most relaxing, enjoyable trips we ever made. And we have been on a lot of trips to many Caribbean and Central American countries.....hate what they have done to the Yucatan. If you want I can give you a contact-the general manager who is from England but went for a vacation and decided to stay.

Been to Casa De Campo and Puerta Plata. Beautiful place to vacation.
Only been to Casa de Campo, and that's pretty upscale. It was $125 a day to play the "Teeth of the Dog."
When they say don't drink the water, they mean it.
I went their with my grandfather and family about 6 years ago. BEAUTIFUL! I forget the name of the place where we stayed, but it was very cheap and the service was first clsas. The people were great, food was awesome. Perfect if you like to just take it easy. Have fun!
I didn't realize how much she was not enjoying it until one day I remarked about how fast the time must be going by and she said, "Well, there are still forty-four and two-thirds days left." Her university canceled the Dominican program the next year.
I'm not too literate in spanish, but I think there's a rather unfortunate misspell in the second line.
The Dominican is a wonderfuly vacation area---they are completely self contained, except for oil---the fruit is just awesome. Try to find an all inclusive resort--they are by far the best. We also were invited to a party in the mountains and our bus got stopped on the way up as a molasses truck had overturned and there was no traction to get up the mountain, so we had to wait for the army to come and clear the road---all to make the trip more eventful. Go and enjoy---it is just super.
Going on a cruise on Dec. 20---returning Jan 1----less than $100.00 day and everything just wonderful for the Holidays.
