Hmong leaders in Fresno are worried that the hunting tragedy in Wisconsin might affect the public's perception and image of Hmong refugees. They also say they want to prevent a similar violent situation from occurring here.
About a dozen people from the Hmong community met Wednesday at the Fresno Center for New Americans to discuss Chai Soua Vang, a St. Paul, Minn., man accused of killing six hunters Sunday. Vang told authorities that the men used racial slurs and shot at him first.
Lue Yang, the center's executive director, said he's worried that negative publicity from the case could affect a new wave of Hmong refugees. Yang and other Hmong leaders said they didn't think the media was neutral because it identified the suspect's ethnicity.
About 2,200 Hmong from Thailand are expected to arrive in the Fresno area by next year. They started coming in June. "Many people might ask, 'Why should we take more refugees?'" Yang said.

Don't fly either... The plain might crash.
"Vang told authorities that the men used racial slurs and shot at him first."
That explains those unarmed people, shot multiple times in their backs? Lying skunks.
PING!
We have a large Hmong population in Wisconsin. This is the first incident I can remember involving anyone of that "community" and I've lived here on and off for 44 years.
Why on Earth, other than for obvious leftist, pre-disposed to panic over any social injustice reason (real or imaginary), should people in CA be concerned about this?
Does the media think we're all such a bunch of hicks up here and across the nation that we can't see that this Vang guy would be a psycho no matter what his race?
Let's make sure we politicize this homicide ASAP! Yeesh.
I don't think this has affected the image of Hmong immigrants in general. I think it will make folks VERY suspicious of Hmong deer hunters.
Any Hmong leaders who are concerned about their image in California should reach out to the Department of Fish & Game to make sure that any of their folks who like to hunt deer are well schooled in hunter safety and in State laws concerning deer hunting and trespassing.
When Vietnamese immigrants were showing up in So Cal a generation ago they were notorious for fishing wherever and whenever they pleased without a license. I haven't heard of such scofflaw behavior in recent years.
Maybe people got fed up with reporting it and having it explained away as a "cultural" issue, because that behavior sure as heck is continuing here and now.
Thanks Ls. For the magnitude of this incident there are remarkably FEW news articles about it. Go Figure.
White hunters in Wisconsin might have been losing sleep as well. Last I looked the Hmong were leading 6 (possibly 7) to nought.
We all, all of us, end up at the conclusion of our short journey, either as a box of dusty bones six feet deep or in an urn of ashes spread to the four winds at sea or stuck in a wall behind a slab of cement. There's no 'Asian' or 'European' or 'Black' remaining in any of that.
That is exactly how the Heavenly Father accepts us back, without any color or race. And that is how we will be for eternity.
It seems a challenge to begin thinking in these deeper, real terms even before we die, during our short time here on Earth. Yet, those who only care about 'race', (for both sides baiting on this issue, continue to hate, persecute or feel persecuted), all because of inconsequential flesh pigmentation and / or eye-fold shape. Sad.
Well said!
I've already been asking.
I have a better idea. Why don't these "other Hmong leaders" try educating the HMONG on our laws and customs. THEY are the ones REQUESTING political refugee status. Or did I miss something?
The same can be said of Arabs and many Latino kids in this country.
Back in the early 90s there was this problems with the Hmong refugees settled here.
The community leaders with the Hmong leaders in our area. Set up a out reach education program. And most of the problems went away.
When I drive into town. I see One family working in a field they purchased. Its about a 40 and its weed free. (by hand)
Another 2 families Im working with are setting up a small beef feeding farm.
To all who complain. What have you done to make them welcome, and help in there transition.
"Let's make sure we politicize this homicide ASAP! Yeesh"
No, but it sure should be prosecuted as a 'hate crime' (assuming there REALLY is such a thing...).
