Plano baby dies after arms cut off

04:01 PM CST on Monday, November 22, 2004

By JENNIFER EMILY and TERRI LANGFORD / The Dallas Morning News

An 11-month-old baby died Monday after her arms were cut off, and her mother has been charged with capital murder, Plano police said.

Dena Schlosser, 35, called 911 on Monday morning to report that she had cut off her infant’s arms. When authorities arrived, they found the child with her arms severed. Police said the woman was waiting calmly, with blood on her clothing, when they arrived.

The baby was taken to nearby Plano Medical Center about noon, where she died, Plano police spokesman Carl Duke said.

Authorities said other family members, including two school-age children, live in the unit at the Fairway Apartments, just north of Plano Medical Center on Coit Road. None were in the apartment at the time.

Texas Child Protective Services had investigated the mother shortly after the girl's birth in January.

A CPS investigator was called to the woman’s home on Jan. 15 after she was seen running down the street from her apartment, her older 5-year-old girl bicycling after her.

When police and CPS arrived, the older child told them her mother had left her 6-day-old baby sister in the family’s apartment, alone.

The mother, who was despondent, appeared to be suffering from postpartum depression, said Marissa Gonzales, CPS spokeswoman.

“Mom started walking and running from the apartment,” Ms. Gonzales said. “Someone called law enforcement and she was obviously having some sort of psychotic episode.”

The woman was taken to a Collin County medical center where she was hospitalized for a few days. Her other two children - both girls - were released to their father, who told authorities she had been acting strangely since the birth of the third child on Jan. 9.

Once the woman was released from the hospital in January, she agreed to seek counseling and see a psychiatrist, Ms. Gonzales said.

The woman kept all of her appointments and at one time, was prescribed with a psychotropic drug to treat the depression. CPS caseworkers continued to visit the family through the spring and summer.

“She was doing well,” Ms. Gonzales said.

The case was closed Aug. 9.

What is it with postpartum depression? I never had it- not with either of my boys.

Why is it occurring this often now, and with such monstrous violence?

One must consider the history/consequences of liberal pardoning.

If I had a dollar for every story where someone coming off of Prozac or Zoloft killed someone I would be a rich man.

Prayers for the innocent child, the father who will never forgive himself, and the rescue workers who will never forget.

Idiots like Mrs. Gonzales are no help in situations like these. Her STUPID comment does nothing but take the blame from herself. I hope she never forgets this innocent being murdered.

Good work, thank you.

OMG. This is hitting way too close to home.
We lived in those apts when our house was
being built in another city last year...it wasn't the best
apts, but it sure wasn't the worst for something
like this to happen!! It makes me sick to my
stomach to think I may have interacted with this
person. If only someone had realized just how sick
she was. *sigh*

In light of this information, maybe the mother *wasn't* on drugs. Lithium anyone?

Geez, I freak out when the DOG tries to sniff my baby. I cannot imagine ever wanting to do bodily harm to her.

Maybe the drug was necessary because she was nuts, but it seems that violent acts, including the Columbine Massacre and most (if not all) school shootings have involved pharmacotherapy at some point. I know this is coincidental, but is there some possibility of causality here?
