Anyone hiking, camping, or living in an area with bears should have at least one canister of bear pepper spray available at all times. I have the following product:

I'd prefer a good shotgun with 00 buckshot, a .30-06 rifle or a .44 magnum, thank you.
Or even a good Hawkin rifle of .54 caliber or so.

I learn so much at FR. Even though I am armed, shooting a bear in NJ (out of season) is bad news--for the shooter!

That's what I got for my treks out in the Cascades. After crossing paths with a huge black bear (it was actually light brown) I had to get something.
I hope the stuff is as good as everyone says. I wouldn't want to have to fight a bear of that size mano-y-bearo.
