EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) Some East St. Louis Democrats have been ordered to appear before a federal grand jury to answer questions about money spent during the Nov. 2 election, according to a published report.
James Lewis, director of the East St. Louis Board of Elections, and Democratic Central Committee chairman and East St. Louis city councilman, Charlie Powell, both told the Belleville News-Democrat they had received subpoenas to appear before the grand jury.
East St. Louis Regulatory Affairs director, Kelvin Ellis, also received a subpoena, said city manager Robert Storman. Ellis, who also serves as a Democratic precinct committeeman, declined to comment, Storman said.
The newspaper obtained a copy of a subpoena served to another Democratic committeeman, who the newspaper did not name. The subpoena ordered the committeeman to bring ``any and all records relating in any manner whatsoever to the receipt of money and funds by East St. Louis precinct committeemen relative to the Nov. 2, 2004, election'' to the grand jury.
The subpoena was dated Nov. 10 and signed by Assistant U.S. Attorney Hal Goldsmith.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Randy Massey said Tuesday his office does not comment about grand jury matters.
Busted...
This is just another example of voter intimidation. They are trying to suppress the vote. Its racism. They fear the Democratic message. Uhhh... hurry we have to help these poor souls..
How dare they expect the Democrats to obey the law! Disenfranchisement!
rutt ro.
I hope the guilty are shown over and over again taking the "perp walk" to jail.
