"....[Guadalupe] Madrigal, who could not immediately be reached for comment, could have been fined up to $950 under Mexican law mandating respect for the national seal, flag and hymn...."

With all the machismo bullcrap Mexican males demonstrate in the presence of Mexican women, I wonder if there would have been any fine at all if the screw-up was done by a Mexican male instead of a female.

Also.........

About their law about respecting the Mexican Flag: Next time a Mexican disrespects the American flag, somebody ought to send el Presidente Vicente Fox a post card of the Mexican flag blazing in the sunset.

What a bunch of ignorant anti-Mexican bullcrap.

Mexican law mandating respect for the national anthem is not unlike the constitutional amendment against flag burning supported by many conservatives.

Many Mexican men as well as women have been fined over the years without regard to gender.

Republicans and conservatives will not be able to win a governing majority with only the Anglo vote.

Dubya got 45% of the Hispanic vote and it probably made the difference in several key states.Republicans will not be able to build on that success with this type anti-Mexcian bullcrap.

Drobot could have made the point that this was a very stupid action on the part of the Mexican government without expanding it into an attack on the Mexican people.

Nobody seems to think that this "disrespect" was intended, but that she fumbled the words of the anthem. If forgetting the words of "The Star-Spangle Banner" were a crime, then 99% of the American singers would be guilty.

Better do more research on your numbers for the election. I'm apologize for not being able to be specific, but I have read some anaysis on the overall numbers and in specific states.

For one, 88% of the votes cast for Bush were from white voters. If you look at states like Texas where Bush supposedly received more of the Hispanic vote than in 2000, he should have won by a wider margin, because he did carry a wider margin of the white vote.

The point is that the overall margin of victory and the victory in individual states does not match the scenario of a great gain in the Hispanic vote.

It is still likely that he received only 30 something percent of the Hispanic vote - which does not bode well for the future of conservatism.

In response, I would say that 99% of famous American singers are braindead.

I would say this with a straight face, since it is the brutal truth. :P

Dubya got 45% of the Hispanic vote

According to exit polls --- which also showed that Kerry won the election. There wasn't a place on my ballot for race -- and precinct by precinct analysis doesn't prove your assertion. The 100% hispanic districts didn't vote 45% for Bush especially along the border.

You're right --- that widely cited 45% is from exit polling --- but exit polling was done more in the suburbs and with English speakers --- it's not representative of the barrios and colonias.

Roseanne Barr would have been given 'Life Without Parole' if we could have charged her!

Cut her some slack. That anthem has foreign words in it.

"The 100% hispanic districts didn't vote 45% for Bush especially along the border."

Actually they did. Bush even won some of the Texas border counties. Check your facts.

...Roseanne??..

Ahh, you're right. I get these two mixed up. It was Roseanne Barr that butchered the National Anthem and then laughed about it.

It's perfectly reasonable to mix 'em up. Pigs are hard to separate - they all look alike.

Maybe you should check your facts --- you're only quoting some exit polls --- exit polls also showed Kerry won the election.

You are not citing precinct by precinct election analysis --- just some claims being made that since "they" voted for Bush now what is La Raza going to be given in return.

Polls at odds over whether Latinos were swing vote for Bush

But a Hispanic think tank is challenging that view.

"We want to set the record straight," Antonio Gonzalez, president of the Willie C. Velazquez Institute, said yesterday. "I think it's good for Latinos to be able to leverage both parties, but that should be based on the facts."

He presented figures showing Bush received 34.2 percent of the Hispanic vote, while Sen. John Kerry received 64.6 percent.

White House political adviser Karl Rove, who was delighted by the initial exit polls, said the Velazquez Institute's figures were unreliable because they relied too much on precincts in heavily Latino areas.

Interesting --- Karl Rove wants the "hispanic" vote judged by the non-hispanic districts --- what sense does that make? The 100% hispanic districts did not vote for Bush --- not even close. If you're going to look at the 30% hispanic district --- it gets a little difficult to determine the real percentage since "race" isn't checked in the voting booth.

Do you see all those red counties along the bottom of the map, from the tip of Texas to the California coast? They are all about as close to 100% Hispanic as you can get. Cameron county, on the tip of Texas includes Brownsville, a major urban center, and has close to 500,000 people, a majority of whom voted for Bush. I don't know what the actual % of Hispanic vote was for Bush and I doubt anyone else does either. Everyone is spinning the Hispanic vote to suit themselves. I am just looking at the Hispanic county vote which is very evenly divided. Where Kerry won, he didn't win by much, where Bush won he also didn't win by much.
