Gangs spark worry in valley (Shenandoah Valley, VA.)

HARRISONBURG - For years, the signs literally had been everywhere.

Violent street gangs were gaining a presence in the Shenandoah Valley, and members were scrawling signature graffiti on buildings and bridges. But esoteric markings of letters and symbols meant little to local police beyond vandalism.

Then, last year, authorities discovered in Shenandoah County the body of a young woman with ties to a violent Central American gang.

Brenda Paz was a member of the violent Mara Salvatrucha or MS-13, living in witness protection last year and set to testify against members of MS-13 in a Northern Virginia murder case. Paz was abducted from the Harrisonburg area before she was killed, said Rockingham County Sheriff Don Farley.

I'm in SW Va and I'll gladly carry a six-shooter up there if need be. I never thought I'd be entertaining the idea of learning Spanish while living in VA just to hear what was being said around me like I did with German while living there.

I was listening to Spanish in a grocery store in Claremont, New Hampshire this past weekend. Might have been tourist, though...one of the men was sporting a 'Tarheels' ball cap.

I went for a walk on US 11 in Harrisonburg one night last April, while staying at a small mom and pop motel just south of the city limits in Rockingham Co. No one bothered me. :-)

Yeah, here in SW VA some of the police recommend keeping a "drop gun" for such people should it become necessary. You don't want to lose your good one to an evidence locker.
