DURHAM, N.H., October 28, 2004The University of New Hampshire has evicted a student from housing for posting fliers in his residential hall joking that freshman women could lose the Freshman 15 by walking up the dormitory stairs. The public university found him guilty of violating policies on affirmative action, harassment, and disorderly conduct, and has sentenced him to mandatory counseling and probation along with his eviction.

In appealing his sentence, student Timothy Garneau explained that the flier was intended to make light of the common frustration with people who delay the elevator by taking it for just one or two floors instead of taking the stairs. UNH rejected his appeal, and Garneau was ordered to move out of his dormitory. Garneau reports that he is currently living out of his car.
Forcing a student into homelessness for posting a satirical flier is not just unlawfulits cruel, remarked David French, president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, which has intervened on Garneaus behalf. UNH is demonstrating to its community not only that it will ignore their First Amendment freedoms, but also that it doesnt care about the basic welfare of its students.

Man, I look back at all the lunacy I committed in college, and I would have lasted hours in today's university setting.
How is this any different than the "Public Service Ads" that show flabby body parts, and propose "they must of lost it by walking on the beach"?
For this he is expelled?
Since this is November 15, and the article was published on October 28, what do you suppose the odds are that this hasn't been posted here?
It has...multiple time.
LOL, Sexist - yes. Funny - Yes. True - yes. Worthy of getting a person kicked out - heck no.
I would have lasted hours in today's university setting.
Considering the things I did in college, today I wouldn't even have my bags unpacked... |
I do not believe he was expelled just kicked out of the dorm. I too get irritated when people ride the elevator one flight.
Living in college dorms has its ups and downs.
Another example of overreaching by government and its institutions. You don't have the right to not be insulted.
Now more of you will understand why locals are starting to refer to New Hampshire as "East Vermont".
9 out of 10 freshman girls gain 10 - 15 pounds. But there is something you can do about it. If u live below the 6th floor takes the stairs. Not only will u feel better about yourself but you will also be saving us time and wont be sore on the eyes.
I'm not so sure Mr. Garneau is ready for college.
In the old days this young man's punishment would be a lack of dates from offended women.
That is shocking. Must be some FAT girls took offense.
Plenty of them around here to be offended, I guess.
Sort of like the Navy. I joined the Navy to ride the WAVES... however, what I didn't realize before joining is that most Navy women are issued a Floatation Device in Boot Camp, and they wear it for their entire careers...
When I was at UW-Madison back in the 80's, there was a large group that called itself "Macho Nerds for Reagan". They dressed in what they fancied to be "preppy" attire, and spewed the most hateful things imaginable about our President. They had a female auxiliary called "Girl Geeks for the Gipper". They were all wrong-headed, vile, vulgar, blasphemous, and offensive. That said, it made for hilarious guerrilla street theater.
Today, I would bet that such a group would be celebrated if it were on the same political side, but banned and its members expelled if they were making fun of, say, Barney Frank. I suppose that you get a large dose of irony for the cost of tuition nowadays.
UNH, it seems, is trying to outdo Dartmouth (I confess -- my alma mater) in the "PC Lunacy" Department.
It has...multiple time.
