Secretary of State Connor to resign Associated Press

AUSTIN (AP) — Secretary of State Geoff Connor, appointed to the position last year, said Friday he will resign from the post at the end of the year.

Connor, who oversaw the state's general election, said he wants to return to the private sector.

"A record number of Texans got their chance to participate in our democracy by casting their votes in a well-run and efficient election across the state," said Connor.

, Texas' 104th secretary of state. "Working with county election offices across the state, we were able to demonstrate that Texas democracy and citizen participation is alive and well."

Connor replaced Gwyn Shea, who resigned last year. A new secretary of state will be appointed by Gov. Rick Perry.

Connor, a native of Runnels County, has served in several roles in state government. He previously was assistant secretary of state for about three years. He also has worked for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the Texas Department of Agriculture.

The Texas secretary of state's office oversees state elections, maintains business and public filings, acts as the governor's chief liaison for border affairs and oversees international protocol for the state.

Also Friday, Gov. Rick Perry appointed Luis Saenz, assistant secretary of state, as director of his re-election campaign. Saenz will be replaced by Buddy Garcia, who will be responsible for border affairs and international protocol as well as elections, business filings and daily operations of the secretary of state's office.
