Some of the worst horrors of the war in Iraq were on sale right here in the bay area. Action News found a DVD featuring the beheading of two Americans being sold at a Tampa gas station, but it was not the work of Muslim extremists.
The 90-minute video, titled Buried in the Sand, shows the gruesome way Saddam Hussein tortured his country. It also prominently features the end of Nicholas Berg's life -- in all, a series of brutally graphic, violent images culminating with the beheading.
The DVD was on a shelf right inside the front door of a Shell station on E. Busch Boulevard. The station's assistant manager, 'Sal,' couldn't explain why the station was selling it, but he admitted the images made him sick.
"What's in there is very disgusting. What you see is disgusting. It's not something to be proud about. I think it shows the U.S. isn't bad about the war. They free a country," he observed in broken English.
What might be most surprising about the video, however, is who was behind it. The movie was actually produced by two Republicans out of California as part of the campaign propaganda, meant to counter films like Fahrenheit 9/11.
"I just wanted to get the truth out there and let people know what the face of our enemy was really like," producer Rob Cartee told Action News.
Cartee was vague about his distribution agreements and could not explain how the video wound up on the shelves of the gas station.
Shell was unaware the DVD was being sold at a station with their name on it until informed by Action News. The company said it would immediately start an investigation.
A company spokeswoman said that at any station where "merchandise is offered for sale that is morally offensive or distasteful, Shell will demand that the retailer take the appropriate steps to bring the operation into compliance with its contract."
The DVD was on sale for two weeks, and Sal said they sold about half a dozen. But he pledged to pull the remaining copies off the shelf late Monday.
"Right now, I can assure you from this moment, I am going to call whoever supplied it and ask them to pick it up," he said.
It is important to note that selling or owning the Buried in the Sand DVD, no matter how distasteful the beheadings may seem to some, is not illegal. The video comes with a warning on the cover that should prevent it from being sold to anyone under 18.
At least one customer felt that the station was within its rights to sell the video.
"No, I don't like it. Do I think it should be available? Yes," M.T. Jaureguizar observed. "Do I think a gas station is kind of an odd place to have it? Yeah."
These are prime days for people interested in snuff films.
Apparently so.
Good. The world should see what these people do to other people. Clearly, when someone like Michael Moore shows pictures of kids flying Kites in Iraq prior to the war, it's a lie. Show the truth.
That's one of the few things I'll take MSM word for. I don't need to see a video of a beheading to believe it was done. It's not my idea of entertainment.
I find it a bit disturbing though, that someone is profiting from the sale images of Americans being beheaded.
No. It's called educating the public about the horrors of an Islamic state.
That's what I was thinking. There is a sick market for these things no matter what your political persuasion, although I imagine that snuff film devotees have little or no genuine political persuasion. If this was the work of Republicans, they're feeding a serious neurosis, not making points.
That's true. These DVD should be handed out free, or only the cost of the DVD itself should be charged.
Apparent pro-US film is "controversial" according to Channel 10 should be the headline.
That's what is ironic about all of this. It's a helluva way to counter Moore, and I doubt I'd watch it, but if everybody who watched Moore's film watched this, they might have to ask themselves some uncomfortable questions.
Thank you for posting the picture...
Yeah, it is similar to the news never showing the images of people jumping out of the WTC again. Don't wanna paint terrorists as inhuman, ya know.
I heard it was only a New York Spanish station that showed the people jumping.
Yep, as far as I know that is the case.
This a slick censorship job by a TV station, IMHO.
The host of the video is Mark Taylor, who is an occassional fill-in host
on The Dennis Prager Show and The Frank Pastore Show on radio stations run by
the conservative, Christian-leaning Salem Radio Network.
Taylor is involved in the video because of revulsion at the MSM's soft-peddling
(=censorship) of the wicked acts of Saddam and his merry band.
