The Republicans and their lap dog Rush, are engaged in a very cynical game here. Republicans love having the abortion issue out of their hands so they can rail against and fear monger about judges, but they really don't want judges to overturn R v. W. because then the issue would return to the States, and the other side would get energized. As is, with the issue in all reality out of play politically, the issue clearly works in their favor as their are substantially more single issue pro-lifers than there are pro-aborts. Specter, however, is either arrogant or stupid or both. He has clearly overplayed his hand here. Now the evangelicals are watching and this is Bush's first test for if he is going to listen to them. Write and call your Repub Senator. I predict they will have no choice but to dump Specter. BTW, does it surprise you that Rush is waivering on a subject that is not about bombing Iraqis?

The GOP of 2004 is remarkably similar in philosophy to the Democrat party of 1948.

I was okay with taking down Specter UNTIL, I read Oliphant's piece in the Boston Globe encouraging Republicans to give Specter to boot.

Maybe a tin foil hat, but when a noted Democratic mouthpiece encourages Republicans to do something like that, I can't help but think there is a problem with the idea that the Dems hope to capitalize on.

As far as I am concerned, everyone made their point and Specter doesn't dare block any nominees. I don't trust Specter but I trust Santorum.

The White House would never let Specter run that committee if they weren't positive he was on their side.

When President Bush and Vice President Cheney went up to help Specter to get reelected I think it was pretty clear what the deal was....because a lot was on the line at that point, both for Specter and for the Judicary Committee leadership. Karl Rove doesn't seem to have any special worry about this appointment, so it remains to be seen. I think it is very good the Republican Party are the ones leading the questions about this because it shows leadership on their part.

The Libs are under seige and have retreated all the way to the castle keep. Their last citadel which offers the only hope for survival of their policies is The Court. There can be no "selling" to the left of any nominee who will change the status quo on the Court. They are at their Atlantic wall in 1944 and they know it. They will not compromise, they will not surrender. They cannot, their very existence is at stake.

We have fought and won an election that surpasses in importance any American election since 1864 (and perhaps since 1860 and certainly since 1980) animiated by the certain knowledge that the soul of our culture and our democracy were threatened domestically by enemies within who are more subtle and more dangerous in their own way than international terrorists who would kill our bodies as well as our soul. The principle fruit of that victory is the right to nominate Justices who will put stop to the Court's political manipulations. We also have the naked political power to assure confirmation up to but not including a filibuster. The fillibuster is Omaha Beach. Here is where the Libs' Atlantic Wall must finally be breeched.

Those of us old enough to remember the Bork and Thomas hearings know how this will be played out. Television will rivet the entire nation. The pundits will distort the issues to favor the left. The Chairman of the Judiciary Committee must be able to lead the assualt on the very existence of the Left.

Senator Specter has regretably revealed himself in his latest remarks to be uncommitted to the battle. Are we to sustain another halocaust against the unborn because we suffered the wrong man to sell out the victory so dearly won at the ballot box? How many more partial birth abortions must we condone?

The Libs are not without allies in the defense of their last redoubt. The whole of the Mainstream Media know that their ability to shape our culture at the ballot box is gone for a season. The whole of the Academic Legal establishment know that their very respectability and power are at stake. The cultural secularists know that their ability to drive God from the schoolhouse, the courthouse and the town commons will be crippled. The homosexual agenda will be derailed, and they know it. Feminists fear that rationality will finally be brought to bear on laws affecting gender relations. They fear the family might be saved in takt. In short, every desciple of The Frankfurt School knows that everything they have agitatied for leading to the undermining of the American experiment in representative, republican government will be frustrated for at least a generation. All of these institutions and many more will rush to the defense of the filibuster and no restraint in the name of decency can be expected from them. Such fastidiousness such as respect for the traditions of the Senate will encumber only Conservatives in this fight to the death.

We need a Paladin but Specter is not our man.

Harder for dems to filibuster when the head of the judiciary committee is a "perceived" moderate, so could work to our favor.

Look, we're going to battle any Supreme Court nominees - it's just a fact. The important part is to get the district court and appeals court judges in - that's just as much a huge part of our future (trust me, I'm a trial lawyer, I see the BIG difference every day between liberal and conservative judges).

I'm divided on this. I signed several petitions to replace Specter as chair of the committee. I was violently opposed when Bush and Rove intervened for Specter in the first place. I would rather see him gone.

But if Bush wants to go with Specter on a suitable leash, that's his choice. He had just better understand that he, Bush, will be held responsible for what Specter does, because Specter wouldn't be there without the intervention of Bush and Rove.

I personally wish they had kept out of the primary, or had just given Specter a pro-forma recommnedation as the incumbent and left it at that.

Moreover, I think Bush is making a mistake. Specter cannot be trusted. It will be more and more difficult to keep the leash on him as Bush nears the end of his term and the media start bashing him again. And what about the years after 2008, when Specter is still there and Bush is gone?

But I guess it's up to Bush. I sure hope he knows what he's doing. I haven't seen what Rush said, but I imagine he takes a somewhat similar position. If Bush thinks it's better politically to work with Specter, and if Specter keeps the agreement, then it doesn't much matter what he personally thinks, as long as he plays ball.

He doesn't care. The second he becomes chairman, he is not responsible to anyone for five years. He can torpedo Bush at will without consequence. The chances are the president won't be able to get a single nominee on the Supreme Court. Hillary Clinton will probably pick the next 5-7 Supreme Court justices.

Hopefully this won't block Justice Ashcroft!

I can't imagine much of a worse choice.

A guy who ignores major crimes to bust bong dealers and porno movie makers has the wrong priorities.

The US is not safer because Tommy Chong did time.

It would be safer if some of Klintoon's cronies, or the 'toon or the witch were behind bars.

I trust Santorum AND the President, but they lack judgement in this case.

Why trust this man a all?? The reptile has both already burnt W and Santorum.
