NEW YORK (AP) - The sister of Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa gave birth to twins Tuesday, just three days shy of her 57th birthday. Aleta St. James, who became pregnant by in-vitro fertilization, and her newborn son and daughter are doing well, said Maria Sliwa, the babies' aunt.
Francesca, who weighs 5 pounds, 12 ounces, and her brother Gian, who weighs 5 pounds, 3 ounces, were delivered by Caesarean section at Mount Sinai Medical Center. They are in excellent health, said Dr. Jonathan Scher, who delivered the babies.
St. James, a motivation speaker who helped her brother set up the crime-fighting group in the 1970s, said earlier this week that it's never too late to become a mother.
You are never too old," she said. "It's just in your mind."
Oh my! Better her than me :)
Oy.
Tony Randall had a kid at 80....
I wish them well.
And how much time has he spent with her recently?
I'll defer to the women to determine the answer to your question, but as a 46 y/o man whose youngest is 12, I would not want to be a dad to a newborn at 57.
My uncle (RIP) died in his mid-60's with toddlers in the house (wife #3).
This is so selfish. What kind of parent will this person be to those kids? Children need a parent that has enough energy to chase them around, keep an eye on them when they are teenagers, and can understand their lives. This woman is several generations removed from this. Instead of raising all our insurance rates up because of her infertility treatments, how about if she adopted or took in foster children. There is something very wrong with this woman.
Howie Carr was all over this yesterday. Best comment from a caller: "the kids will be getting out of their diapers at about the time mom's getting into hers."
I think Cary Grant did too. If not, he was at least in his 70s.
I think t's great! New life should always be welcomed with open arms and celebrated.
To those of you who are worried she won't have the energy to chase toddlers--er--ever hear of young Nannies from Europe?
This woman evidently has the income and lifestyle to both enjoy the babies and to see that they are well-cared-for.
I have always liked the Sliwa family, so I guess I'm a little biased in this mom's favor.
My brother was 58 in June, his wife is 34. He has a 19-month year old daughter, and two sons, 5 and 7. They want more. He has a 29 year old daughter from his first marriage.
Sorry, but money cannot buy a mother and father's love. If a birth happens naturally in advanced age - rejoice! But to pay for science experiments to create a child that will most likely face the reality of
Adopt a child or take better care of the grandkids.
1) 57 years old;
2) Has no husband (I assume that she is divorced or widowed); and
3) Is a motivational speaker (doesn't that occupation require a great deal of time spent away from home?)
This is nuts. She'll be 75 when the kids graduate from high school, assuming that she is still alive. There is an excellent chance that she will be dead or incapacitated by then. Even now, who's going to raise her children? I assume that they will be fobbed off on nannies, relatives, everyone but her.
She's only thinking of her own happiness and gratification, not the long-term welfare of her children.
Why have children if you plan on using nannies?
Sorry, typo from previous post ;~)
It would be difficult for a 57-year old single woman, or even a married couple, to find a baby to adopt in this country. Adoption agencies are naturally reluctant to hand over an infant to someone who will very possibly die or at least be seriously ill while the child is young. Perhaps she/they would have more luck searching for a child overseas: the orphanages are less selective.
Who knows? Why did God allow these two lives to come into existence?
I am a prolifer, and of the opinion that every new life comes from the hand of God, and should be welcomed and nourished. This applies regardless of whether the parents are married or unmarried, kooky middleaged women, or young girls who are victims of incest.
Every human child conceived on this earth has the right to life. No one can predict how happy or unhappy, useful or lazy, brilliant or dumb these children will be. Only God knows. And He breathed life into them, even in vitro.
I am what you may call an extreme pro-lifer.
