Hostages Taken at Mexican Consulate in Los Angeles; Man Apparently Shot

LOS ANGELES (AP) - At least one suspect took an unknown number of hostages Tuesday at the Mexican consulate, and a TV news camera later showed a man apparently being shot as he held a woman by the neck. KNBC-TV broadcast videotape of a man clutching a sign while using a woman as a shield as police followed them down a sidewalk. The man suddenly let go of the woman's neck and fell backwards, as if he was shot. The woman escaped unhurt and police closed in on the man.

One person was taken to a hospital, said Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis.

A portion of the area was evacuated after the hostage situation began at about 8:30 a.m., said Officer Kristi Sandoval, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department. Police cordoned off several blocks around the building near downtown Los Angeles, and ambulances and fire trucks gathered nearby.

A news helicopter hovering above the building showed video of several people standing near windows of the four-story building.

A telephone call to the consulate's press office went unanswered and the Mexican embassy in Washington had no immediate comment or details.

Anyone want to bet that the sign had something to do with "immigrants rights"?

We should pull out of Los Angeles County.
It's a quagmire.

Of the 1,070 reported homicides in Los Angeles County in 2000, 448 were gang-related. The percentage of gang-related homicides more than doubled from 1980 to 2000.
- Scott Carrier, Coroner's Office; Wes McBride, LA County Sheriff's Department
NOTE: This is more than we have lost in Iraq due to hostile enemy action.

In 2002, there were 474 homicides in just the City of Los Angeles alone, an increase of 23.4% from 2001.
- LAPD Crime Statistics, 2002

In 2002, there were 949 rapes in the City of Los Angeles, an increase of 1.1% since 2001. Worse than Fallujah.
- LAPD Crime Statistics, 2002

In 2002, there were 13,915 aggravated assaults/ domestic violence crimes in the City of Los Angeles, an increase of 4.6% since 2001

Police shoot hostage-taker at Mexican consulate in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES – A man holding a woman hostage outside the Mexican consulate was shot and wounded by police Tuesday. The woman escaped unharmed.

Officers responding to a report of a kidnapping in progress confronted a suspect outside the consulate and shots were fired, said Sgt. Catherine Plows. She did not know if any other hostage-takers remained in the building. After the shooting, a SWAT team was preparing to enter the building.

The wounded man was taken to a hospital and his condition was not immediately known.

The man had a large homemade sign, written in English, attached to his body. It was not clear what the sign said.

A videotape recorded by Telemundo showed the black-clad man, his arm around the woman's neck, leave a building and back down a sidewalk as police closed in.

The man suddenly collapsed backwards to the ground and officers pulled the woman away as others pointed their guns at him. Officers picked up the man and rushed him away.

The area around the consulate began about 8:30 a.m., said Officer Kristi Sandoval, a Police Department spokeswoman.

Police cordoned off several blocks around the building in the MacArthur Park neighborhood and ambulances and fire trucks gathered nearby.

A telephone call to the consulate's press office went unanswered and the Mexican embassy in Washington, D.C., had no immediate comment or details.

Someone called in on the radio and said the guy was wearing an anti-Bush/GOP sign around his neck written in English. My guess is that this is the west coast version of the guy that killed himself at the WTC over the election results the other day.
