Muslim advocacy groups are attempting to suppress the publication of the book Prophet of Doom by Craig Winn, claiming it is "blasphemous:" Stop Hatred & Misinformation about the Best of Creation (peace be upon him) Petition.

We the undersigned declare that we are utterly shocked and dismayed at the blasphemous publication of Mr. Craig Winn's book "Prophet of Doom" (Publisher: CricketSong Books - April 25, 2004) that presents false and malicious information regarding our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), the Prophet who is revered by 20 percent of the world's population, and who Muslims believe to be the Prophet sent as a Mercy to all the worlds.

Mr. Winn, a businessman, who according to Amazon.com's own editorial review knew nothing about Islam prior to 9/11, reveals his lack of knowledge and poor scholarship in his fictitious writing, which is outside the pale of America's freedom of expression as it contributes towards the provocation of hate and the fraying of the fabric of its multi-cultural society by offending the sensibilities of a large segment of its population ...

We call for the removal of all copies of this book from all bookstores - regular or online and for the cessation of its publication immediately.

This petition to stifle criticism of Islam has garnered almost 45,000 signatures as of this writing. But here's a counter-petition you can sign, urging bookstores not to cave in to these un-American scare tactics: First Amendment freedoms include the right to criticize Islam and Muhammad Petition.

Given efforts by Muslims around the world to stifle criticism of their religion, in many cases through the use of violence (the most famous example of which being the Salman Rushdie affair), we consider the Muslim petition demanding censorship to be little more than a scare tactic to intimidate the author from publishing his book. Whether we agree with the content of the author's book is irrelevant; the simple fact that Muslims are trying to intimidate him from exercising his First Amendment freedoms urges us to demand that bookstores continue circulating this book as they please. Particularly in response to the recent murder of Theo van Gogh, a Dutch filmmaker critical of the mistreatment of Muslim women, we feel it necessary that all supporters of free expression take a stand against Islamist scare tactics. Thus, we demand that all bookstores ignore such scare tactics and make Mr. Winn's book readily available, in accordance with customer demand.

When I read reviews that attack this book, I can't help seeing the ignorance of such critics in regard to at least one area, history.
Anyone with the knowledge of freshman history or probably even at highschool level could clearly see the blunders that are in the Quran. Why Moslems cannot see them is due to being brainwashed since childhood and are taught to never question Islam. No one can tell me that I don't know what I am talking about for I happen to be a former Moslem who had enough guts to question this diabolical and anti-human religion and its most unholy book, the Quran. I have spent years researching the lies, violence and the filth that this belief system has been spreading for the past 1400 years. A cursary reading of the Quran should give one a fair idea as to what this fiendish religion is all about. Islam is not a religion of peace. The political correctness in favor of Islam which has been touted by some of our politicians is truly misleading, criminal and nauseating.
I am so thankful to Craig Winn for his courage and dedication to produce such an excellent and thoroughly researched work. The petrified Islamic brain cannot understand what this book is trying to say.
The diabolical spirit of Islam hates to be exposed and that's the main reason behind all assassination attempts on the lives of many who have dared and still do to criticize this satanic reloigion and its sadistic and demon possessed prophet. The following one item should be sufficient to cause every educated Moslem or any Islam sympathizer quite an embarrassment, for their god is an absolute illiterate concerning historical issues. How can a ruler(Nimrod)who lived about 2800 BC attempt to burn a person(Abraham) who lived around 2000 BC? Well, the story is in the Quran, one of Muhammad's owns concoctions. But, Moslems believe that their Book is holy! Everything is possible with Allah, only if a person is dumb enough to check his/her brain at the door and believe whatever Muhammad/Allah says!
ONLY THOSE IGNORANT OF THE HISTORICAL FACTS TEND TO GET ANGRY AT SUCH A BOOK. People need to know that Islam is a false and grossly perverted religion. I believe that this book can be an invaluable educational tool to unmask this global menace. Unless a critic of this well-written book is in full control of his/her intellctual faculties, ought not to utter a word and is not qualified to give an opinion. Please spare us your raw emotions and Islamic venom.
If you have something intelligent and reasonably solid to say, fine; but do not reveal your ignorance by defending this indefensible belief system.
My suggestion for all the Moslems, specially those who hate this book is that they should educate themselves in the subject of ancient history and break out of the 1400 year old cobweb-covered
Islamic mindset to be able to see for the first time what is like to use a gift called FACULTY OF REASON.

Coincentally, today I had some spare time at work (cough) and, among others, checked out Prophet of Doom. Most of the reviews were negative one star -- I thought that CAIR or some similar group must have sent out an e-mail urging supporters to pan the book, a book they probably never read. I wonder why this book is targeted: there are several other good books critical of Islam, by authors such as Robert Spencer, Serge Trifkovic and Ibn Warraq, and they aren't the subject of a hate campaign, at least not yet.

I think that the book is also available for download -- is it free that way?
