Mechanic Finds Live Bomb Under Car During Oil Change
Car Owner Linked To Group That Funds Irish Republican Army
POSTED: 12:19 pm EST November 5, 2004
UPDATED: 12:44 pm EST November 5, 2004
A mechanic performing a routine oil change discovered a live bomb underneath a car apparently rigged to explode when the driver turned the vehicle's lights on, according to Local 6 News.
Police said Jim Panaro drove his car to Donald's Auto Repair shop located at 57th Avenue and Johnson Street in Hollyood, Fla., after he noticed wires dangling under the car's rear bumper. A mechanic then found the explosive.
"It was wrapped in tape and had putty underneath," a Donald's mechanic said. "So, we put it up in the air and saw a wire running on top and then called 911 right away." Two hours after shutting down and evacuating an entire neighborhood, the Broward County bomb squad removed the device and detonated it. Hollywood police refused to say what kind of bomb it was, only that it was the real thing, Local 6 News reported.
According to public records, the owner of the car, Panaro is a former chairman of a group called Noraid, which is known to fund the Irish Republican Army. Panaro said he is no longer affiliated with the group and has no idea who might target him. Police are continuing their investigation. Watch Local 6 News for more on this story.

Looks like it could be a friend of Ted Kennedy's - how far from the West Palm Beach compound - (Wm.Kennedy Smith's romp round the pool place)?

Extremely misleading title - making it sound like the IRA was doing the bombing. You must be a NYT or CBS reporter.

This is a really weird article. Anyone who frequents more "rough" Irish pubs knows that the IRA is certainly not dead in the US, but they are mostly inactive.
A truly strange article.

The IRA (like ETA, the Basque terrorist group) is very connected with Islamic terrorism, and indeed is credited with having trained the Muslims in the art of car-bombing. It's all business with them; they'll accept money from any other terrorist group that hates the West, since they are all Marxists.
In Florida, I'd be looking for weapons smuggling or other similar things that this guy - who does not have an Irish last name - might be involved in.

Back in 1995 or 96 there was an armored car heist at what was then a Lucky store (since changed to Albertson's due to the merger) in San Francisco. It was linked to the IRA. I was not all that surprised. I lived in the Sunset District, which, while more or less a Chinese neighborhood these days, still had its hold outs from its Irish past. In fact, living across the street from me were a bunch of Irish painters and such, who, if they had wanted to, could have also been IRA hiding out here in the US....

"Extremely misleading title - making it sound like the IRA was doing the bombing. You must be a NYT or CBS reporter."
Before you go running off to insult people, try reading the article first:
"According to public records, the owner of the car, Panaro is a former chairman of a group called Noraid, which is known to fund the Irish Republican Army"
The title I submitted to FR included the descriptor "Irish Republican Army linked". This is absolutely true....the IRA is LINKED to this story...I never said that they are the ones who planted the bomb...it's not yet been disclosed who did this so of course I would have no reason for saying such a thing, which I didn't. They may well turn out to be the perpetrators in the end, we will just have to wait and see.

Unless they get him in some other way. For anyone to go to all the trouble in trying to bomb the guy - he must have really pissed off a bunch of people.

Let me get this straight. The car owner took the vehicle to a mechanic because he saw wires hanging under the car so the mechanic decided to give the car an OIL CHANGE? WT*?

I got closer to the IRA then I wanted once back in the late eighties. It involved a long evening and a lot of Tullamore Dew, and a drunken fool stumbling into the room with his mouth running on about "the gun money". The reaction of the others was proof of it being for real. I just tried to act drunk and oblivious.
I don't feel safe in or around conspiracies.
To: StockAyatollah
It wouldn't surprise me a bit if the IRA planted the bomb. Noraid is the fund raising arm of a terrorist organization (the IRA) and as a former chair I'm sure he knows things that other people want to get out. I'm sure Panaro is dirty too... you can't dig that deep into that filth and not be.
To: GOP_1900AD
"Irish painters and such, who, if they had wanted to, could have also been IRA hiding out here" what the heck does that mean?? How can you describe someone as a person who "if they had wanted to, could have also been IRA..."? What does that even mean? You really gotta re-read before you hit Post!! Dang!!

a drunken fool stumbling into the room with his mouth running on about "the gun money". Yeah,I ran into a few idiots like that here in Ireland. We're not afraid of them here. If they mouth off about the IRA, then you know they're talking bollocks - showing off. They're into more criminal activities these days with a few knee-cappings and the like. We regard them as scumbags-espically irish_thatcherite.

You wanna hear weird? Castro harbors IRA terrorists and met with the lead guy a few years ago. Castro cares about Florida like no one else -- it's where his "mafia terrorist" enemies live -- the Cuban exiles. Still this is weird.
