Conservatives urge Bush to go his own way

Conservative activists say President Bush should push forward with his second-term mandate ratified by 59 million voters on Election Day, including a constitutional amendment banning same-sex "marriage."

On issues ranging from tax cuts to Social Security to abortion, Republican stalwarts yesterday said the president should stick to his winning campaign agenda, rejecting calls to "reach out" to the Democratic minority in Congress.

"Democrats still don't get it," said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform. "What they want Bush to do -- change the goals he told voters he'd get done if they gave him a second term -- isn't going to happen. Why? Because even more than Reagan, Bush is an agenda president."

Pat Buchanan yesterday declared Mr. Bush's re-election -- with 22 percent of voters naming moral issues as most important -- a victory in the "culture war" that was the subject of Mr. Buchanan's famous 1992 Republican convention speech.

"George W. Bush was re-elected president because he turned this election into a triumphal, epic battle of the cultural war as his father refused to do in 1992," said Mr. Buchanan, who challenged the first President Bush in the 1992 Republican primaries. "The son stuck by his party's platform and themes as his father did not."

The surprising emphasis on moral issues found in exit polls heartened social conservatives, as did the results from 11 states, including the battleground of Ohio, where bans on same-sex "marriage" were approved by voters.

Robert Knight of the Culture and Family Institute called the success of the marriage amendments a reaction to the Massachusetts court ruling that legalized such unions in Democratic challenger Sen. John Kerry's home state.

Buchanan-come-lately... Can we coin that? Top issue = border control. Leave gay marriage 'til the end. Brilliant move by Rove, but not that big a deal.

Pat Buchanan doesn't get it any more than the liberals do. George W never did and never has and never will run his campaign to appease ANYONE on any side. I know because I did continual research on George W as governor... he does not set policy according to polls or what might get him reelected... he really is one of those rare politicians tht does things he thinks will be good for the country he loves. I know that is a really hard concept to get your head around, but it is true, nonetheless... I know, cause I tried to prove otherwise for a number of years.

I think the President needs to do all that he said he would do and then some. 4 years from now, Afghanistan will look even better, Iraq will be close behind, obl and zarkawi will be dead, the economy will be booming, the tax code fixed and fair, social security fixed, deficit down, moral clarity in play...leading to more conservative power in '08

My simple question is this. If the shoe was on the other foot, how would sKerry and the dims be treating honest God fearing people? I think we get a hint of it through some of the more recent writings and it SCARES me!

If Bush wants to bring many dems onboard and solidify his base:

Seriously address illegal immigration issue - both sides (including immigrants) want something done about this now

If they fail to get constitutional ammendment to define marriage as man and woman, this will be challenged on state by state level as was abortion. Dems will seek out liberal judges to overturn the will of the people.

Do away with judicial appointees who are not accountable to the people.

With all due respect, I don't think Buchanan said that at all. In this case I think he is spot on. Dubya's win is a major victory in the culture war, whether Bush would define it that way or not.

President Bush must not listen to the MSM, for it delights in trying to destroy him. What the MSM media wants is for Bush not to do anything that the liberals don't want him to do. That's what the MSM means by "reaching out" to the dems. The dems need to reach out to Bush, not the other way around. (I think President Bush is just playing around with the MSM, or at least I hope so.)
