Moscow - One of the hostage takers at the Beslan school in Russia in early September was a senior police officer, the Gazeta newspaper reported on Thursday citing sources at the prosecutor's office.

Prosecutors in the region of North Ossetia, where the deadly raid took place, have identified one of the hostage takers as Bashir Pliyev, a 27-year-old police captain from the neighbouring republic of Ingushetia, Gazeta said.

"Plieyv was identified because investigators had access to his fingerprints, since all interior ministry workers are fingerprinted," an anonymous source at the prosecutor's office was quoted as saying.

The press service at the Ingush interior ministry confirmed that a Bashir Pliyev had worked for it, but that he had not been seen since mid-August, when he told colleagues that he was going out for cigarrettes.

Russian prosecutors have already charged several police officers, both in North Ossetia and in Ingushetia, with negligence over the attack.

The Beslan school hostage siege, which ended up killing more than 340 people, half of them children, has revived fears of inter-ethnic strife in Russia's volatile North Caucasus.

The Beslan school was in mostly Christian North Ossetia, whose people fought a bloody conflict with their neighbours, the Muslim Ingush in the early 1990s.

The presence of ethnic Ingush among the hostage takers at Beslan has sparked fears that the strife could re-ignite.

cigarettes? The liberals have been telling me that its an evil habit...

I would not want to be in a russian prison after being charged in those Beslan crimes... I doubt if any mercy would be shown.

The traditional 40 days of mourning are over (in Beslan most are Orthodox Christian). When do the fireworks start?
