GOP victories have potential to marginalize Republican moderates (Sen Chafee may switch to Dems)

"Regrettably, we have seen an erosion in the Senate of centrists on both sides of the aisle," said Sen. Olympia J. Snowe of Maine, a Republican moderate whose leverage may drop substantially in the next Congress. She said she hoped Bush will push for cooperation between the two parties.

Another GOP moderate, Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee (R.I.), expressed even deeper disappointment, telling the Providence Journal he would not rule out switching to the Democratic Party.

Genetic regression towards the mean is a terrible thing to watch.

As a resident of Ohio suffering under Robert Tax'em Taft I have to agree.

Chafee should be ignored.

Or given an atomic wedgie.

The Taft regression is working like clockwork, although the son of the President was every bit as smart as his Dad. Then the grandson slipped several notches, and the great grandson, is well, your governor.

But only for 2 more years. Thank the good Lord for term limits.

Just a bit of post election euphoric hubris. The high will wear off soon.

Wouldn't that still make the margin in the Senate too thin?
Does legislation have to carry like 2/3 of the Senate or is that the House?

I gotta ask -- why should either Snow or Chaffee be disappointed that Bush won? Ya know, the way I feel is this: yes, I'd like them to stay with the party cuz, well, they add to the cushion. But if we can't count on them when we really need to, then what the hell good are they? So, if they are really that depressed and alienated, I'd say it's time for them to leave. Buh-bye.

Specter did not need to "clarify" his remarks. If you actually read his remarks you will discover that he did not actually say anything particularly controversial, and despite what the headline writers wrote, he did not "warn" the President.

Nobody is more disappointed in the President and Senator Santorum for endorsing Specter at the expense of Congressman Toomey than I am. I did'nt vote for him on Tuesday and I voted and worked actively against him the primary.

But, contrary to what some misinformed people are saying on this board, he is not in the same category as Lincoln Chaffee and Olympia snow. For one thing, he has a very strong pro-Military record, including extremely strong support for National Missile Defense. For another, on law-and-order issues, he is also very strong. Although considered socially liberal, he did vote to ban partial birth abortion, and he did vote in favor of DOMA. He is also pro-business, with a COC rating of 87. In 2003 his ACU rating was 50, and in 2004 (admittedly, the year his contract came up for renewal) it was 63. He has an "A" rating from the NRA.

So please guys, let's not get carried away. He's not the person I'd want as the senior senator from PA, and I'll happily work against him next time should he decide to run again. But he's no New England "Republican" either.

Theoretically, it's a simple majority, but in reality the Senate needs 60 votes to get anything done, cuz of threats of filibusters. And we're still shy of the 60 votes by 5, so Snow and Chaffee are of no real value -- especially if they can't be counted on when push comes to shove. Good riddance.

Chafee is the only Republican from Rhode Island and he's always been a liberal. So I wouldn't be surprised if he does switch. Its about time.

Nope. Ken Salazar from Colorado is joining Nelson. And he knows his state went big for Bush.

Thanks for the instruction. I don't see how we are going to overcome in the Senate then.

Aside from the most vocal RINOs - Specter, Snowe, Collins, and Chafee - everyone has forgotten McCain, Warner, Murkowski, Stevens, Voinovich, Hagel, Lugar, Hatch...

Once again a politician decries the will of the people. America continues to request a conservative Senate that is amiable to the Pres and RINO's say no way. We vote for a Republican majority and Snowe and Chaffed Ass Chafee want to overturn it just like Jumpin Jim?

Go ahead! Look what happened when Jim did it, he became irrelevant and so will these two.

Don't you feel sorry for these crybabies whose candidate for president lost? But if they are given some choice chairmanship where they can throw monkeywrenches into the machinery like Specter on Judiciary, well, then they might stay if we ask them nicely on bended knee. Otherwise, they will go join the minority with no chairmanships to give anyone. Petty, peevish, Rinos! All of them almost as small as Little Tommy. You better believe this bunch of traitors is communicating with one another and trying to cut a deal with the Dems if they can gin up enough to change parties. It's 4 real good possibilities so far, but that isn't enough YET.

Hagle is up in 2006 isn't he? Will the party run an opponent in the primary? That guy has GOT to go.

Expect McCain to become more conservative since the state and the country has gone more conservative. He has his eye on running for Pres and he can read the stats too.
