A Blue City (Disconsolate, Even) Bewildered by a Red America
NY Times ^ | 04 November 2004 | Joseph Berger

Posted on 11/03/2004 7:39:23 PM PST by Lorianne

triking a characteristic New York pose near Lincoln Center yesterday, Beverly Camhe clutched three morning newspapers to her chest while balancing a large latte and talked about how disconsolate she was to realize that not only had her candidate, John Kerry, lost but that she and her city were so out of step with the rest of the country.

"Do you know how I described New York to my European friends?" she said. "New York is an island off the coast of Europe."

Like Ms. Camhe, a film producer, three of every four voters in New York City gave Mr. Kerry their vote, a starkly different choice than the rest of the nation. So they awoke yesterday with something of a woozy existential hangover and had to confront once again how much of a 51st State they are, different in their sensibilities, lifestyles and polyglot texture from most of America. The election seemed to reverse the perspective of the famous Saul Steinberg cartoon, with much of the land mass of America now in the foreground and New York a tiny, distant and irrelevant dot.

I've never seen more prescription drug containers (big assumption there) pulled out in public in one day my whole life...

She's certainly out of step with me. I don't have any "European friends". But what do I know, I live in flyover country.

Disconsolatte! Great name. A double disconsolatte with extra pathos and a sprinkle of shadenfreude.

It is absolutely amazing to me after seeing that huge smouldering hile in the ground at World Trade Center Plaza how easily New Yorkers forgot what Bush did for then -- the consoling, the rallying of the nation around New York, the $20 Billion federal GIFT!

As far as I'm concerned, Manhattan can drown in Latte.

"New Yorkers are more sophisticated and at a level of consciousness where we realize we have to think of globalization, of one mankind, that what's going to injure masses of people is not good for us," he said.

"New Yorkers are savvy," she said. "We have street smarts. Whereas people in the Midwest are more influenced by what their friends say."

Oh, Brother

These people make me want to barf. Who do they think they are...because they live in NYC that they are SMARTER than a midwesterner? That a midwesterner believes everything someone tells them? What condescending snobs.

Or even the rest of the state.

Most NYers would kill to have my house in New York City and I'm the dumb one? But Chicago is on that same Island. Bush beat Kerry by 300,000 votes outside of Cook County.

Striking a characteristic Texas pose near Texas Tech's Jones SBC Stadium yesterday, Hispanarepublicana clutched three morning newspapers (Lubbock Avalanche Journal, Thrifty Nickel Want Ads, and Jr. League Newsletter) to her chest while balancing a large Town & Country Diet Big Red and talked about how jazzed she was to realize that not only had her candidate, George W Bush, won but that she and her city were so in touch with the rest of the country.

"Who do they think they are...because they live in NYC that they are SMARTER than a midwesterner? "

I am reminded of the famous New Yorker cartoon map of the world as seen by a New Yorker. The entire world is Manhattan with a little strip west of the Hudson disappearing to the Pacific Ocean. Flyover country doesn't exist.

In New York it's mind over matter:
"I don't mind and you don't matter".

Some New Yorkers, like Meredith Hackett, a 25-year-old barmaid in Brooklyn, said they didn't even know any people who had voted for President Bush.

There's that world-famous New York City "diversity" that they love to brag about so much...

Your typical New Yorker is probably more familiar with various islands in the Caribbean than he or she is with any particular spot in Europe.

This lady is out of step with a place that is out of step, but she's not in-step with anything at all.

Who do they think they are...because they live in NYC that they are SMARTER than a Midwesterner?

...and what do you think they think of southerners?

When they come down here "on holiday" we treat them as we would wish to be treated, they mistake our manners for simplemindedness.

I lived in Manhattan on the upper east side for almost 7 years...it's all true. The elitism, the arrogance, out of touch, and out of bounds. They have always described themselves as 'an island off the coast of America' and they are just that.

Having said all that, I sure did have lots of fun while I was there!

"None of the people who are likely to be hit by a terrorist attack voted for Bush."
Virginia voted for Bush.

"What's different about New York City is it tends to bring people together and so we can't ignore each others' dreams and values and it creates a much more inclusive consciousness,"

I'm less than a hour drive away from four different bigtime liberal bastions including one that rivals NYC in liberalism (Ann Arbor) and another one (Detroit) that rivals Harlem in democrat percentage. There's a reason my county exceeded its goal by 10,000 Bush votes and went for him by almost 63%. We know your type.

"We need to bring our way of life, which is honoring diversity and having compassion for people with different lifestyles, on a trip around the country."

You people don't get it. The problem isn't diversity. We're very diverse out here. The problem is your leftisms lack of respect for "diversity" that doesn't match your ideology. You leftists force your crap into our schools, our courts, and everything else. If there is anything we out here hate, it is when you leftists, whether it be from NYC, LA, or Davison MI(Michael Moore), force your crap down our throats. Leave us the hell alone and let us make our own decisions.
