Suspected insurgents behead official in revenge for deaths of 85 Muslims

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP): Search teams have found the body of a local official beheaded by suspected Muslim insurgents as revenge for the deaths of 85 rioters in southern Thailand last week, police said.

The head of Jaran Torae, an assistant village leader, was found Tuesday on a roadside with a letter attached saying the killers were avenging the deaths of Muslim rioters in a confrontation with government forces, according to Lt. Krit Boonyarith.

"This is revenge for the innocent Muslim youths who were massacred at the Tak Bai protest,'' the handwritten letter reportedly said. Jaran, 58, a Buddhist official in Sukhirin district of Narathiwat province, went missing late Monday night, the police officer said.

Jaran's corpse, Krit said, was discovered in a rubber plantation about 1 kilometer (0.6 mile) from where the head was found.

"The victim was shot in the chest and we believe his head was cut off after he died,'' the police officer said.

Also Tuesday, a gunman on a motorcycle seriously wounded a Buddhist man, Vitaya Chankong, as he rode home from a market on a motorcycle with his wife and 5-year-old son in the province's Bajor district, said police Col. Somchai Sawatsak.

Vitaya's wife broke her hand when they fell to the ground after the shooting, but the couple's son was not hurt, he said.

Narathiwat is one of three Muslim-dominated provinces in the south that have been wracked by violence the government blames on Muslim militants seeking a separate state. More than 400 people, many of them policemen, have died this year in the region.

The government of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has come in for severe domestic and international criticism for its handling of the Oct. 25 riot at Tak Bai in Narathiwat. Seven people were killed by gunfire while 78 others were crushed to death or suffocated after being stacked into military trucks.

The government announced Tuesday it had established an 11-member panel to investigate the incident. It will be headed by Pichet Sunthonpiphit, a legal expert and former ombudsman of Parliament, and will include at least three Muslims, an official statement said.

The panel is expected to present a report in 30 days.

Another violent government suppression in April was also followed by the beheading of an assistant village headman in Narathiwat.

On April 28, police and soldiers killed 107 suspected militants who attacked police posts in a failed attempt to seize firearms. Many of those killed were armed with machetes and at least 32 were killed inside a 16th century mosque in a massacre that angered Muslims worldwide.

Narathiwat, and the neighboring provinces of Yala and Pattani, were strongholds of the separatist Pattani United Liberation Organization. At its peak PULO commanded more than 20,000 armed guerrillas but the movement disbanded after a government amnesty in 1980s.

Violence erupted again early this year, stoked by feelings of many Muslims that they were subjected to discrimination in a predominantly Buddhist nation.

Haha. I recall that it was reported that someone tipped off the police. When the dopes showed up the police were already in place and waiting for them. Surprise! Ha.

With between 5 - 7 million Muslims already living in the U.S. who refuse to integrate into our culture, how long will it be before they want a seperate state here too?

It's gonna get REALLY ugly here when that happens.

Bravo. When the islamic crazies stop using mosques, they will not have this problem and the rest of the angered Muslims worldwide can shut the hell up about it. I am a Christian. If christian terrorists start using churches to attack and kill innoncet civilians then I will gladly support taking them out. To me, God is more then a building, He is mercy, peace, love and yes - justice.

Probably not too many years into the future. Then we can take the lessons of the Israelis and build a wall around their crappy state so they can kill each other and slowy starve to death in their miserable mosques.

Yes and no. Most of those who died were killed after they were arrested. They needed to transport them out of the area and they did not have enough vehicles or enough troops. Those arrested were made to lie face down in the bed of trucks and were piled 4 to 5 deep. This is how they were transported. Probably a large number died because of exhaustion becuase of not being able to eat or drink anything (because of Ramadan).

Still, I have no sympathy for them. These are the same people who have been responsible for killing Buddhist Monks where their only crime was walking down the street.

Just a clarification, they did not attack anyone from inside the Mosque. They fled there after the attacks on the police/military. They were trying to negotiate a deal when the Thai military came in and blew the place up. Not subtile, but it worked.

Thanks for clarification. Yes - it does work. My feelings on mosques for retreats after terrorist attacks vs. using them as fortresses are the same.
