Buddhist village leader has been beheaded in southern Thailand in revenge for the deaths last week of 85 Muslims in the area, police said. Local people found the head of the 58-year-old deputy village leader on a roadside in Narathiwat province.

The latest violence came as Thailand named a panel to investigate last week's deaths.

Thanks. Pretty brutal but at least this has more balance than a lot of the reports. I get so sick of reading that Pattani was "forced" into Thailand in 1902 and had been an independent Muslim state prior.

The fact is that Pattani had been in tributory state to various Tai Kingdome since the thirteenth century. Other such states include Nan, Phrae, Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Si Thammuset. Nan had a king until 1931 if memory serves me. Yet thes former independent states are prospering and have no desire for independence. The difference is religion.

Muslims can prosper -- The Bunnang Family, famous and central to modern Thailand was initially Muslim and not forced to convert. Thai kiings had several Muslim Prime Ministers in the 17th and 18th centuries. The problem to the Southern Muslims is that Islam cannot rule and that is religiously unacceptable to them. Rant over.
