Mayor finds folly in nasty campaign (Get out the GOP VOTE)

...A Clinton-inspired path for GOP

The inspiration for the Colorado Republicans' plan to win: Hillary Rodham Clinton.

That's right. The U.S. senator from New York - a favorite target for conservatives - created the get-out-the-vote plan that Colorado Republicans mimicked with great success in 2002.

Sean Tonner, the campaign operative for U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard that year and the campaign manager for Pete Coors this year, adapted Clinton's plan for turning out the vote. Allard scored a solid victory despite polls suggesting he was lagging behind Democrat Tom Strickland.

With the Clinton plan in hand, Tonner created a military-style operation that encourages early voting, sends hundreds of volunteers door to door and delivers straggling Republican voters to the polls.

The team checks lists of registered Republicans against the lists of those people who have already voted so it can focus on the people who have not turned out yet.

Tonner estimates that the Republicans will spend a "couple million dollars" on everything, including renting vans and cellphones to keeping in contact with the statewide network of volunteers.

"It's on steroids this time," Tonner said.

The volunteers will get a long-sleeve, red T-shirt that blares: "96 Hour Victory Team. 2004 GOTV Team. 96 Hours, No Sleep ... I Am Bushed and I Need a Coors!"

If you have not made a personal commitment to ACTIVELY participate beyond voting and showing up at rallies, you should consider contacting the local GOP and join a coordinated effort TODAY.

I spent Saturday morning, and will do so again this afternoon, working with other supporters of President Bush and GOP candidates like Pete Coors for Senate, knocking on doors of registered Republicans to identify those who have voted, from those we need to call back on Tuesday. The campaign is even organized enough to actually drive recalcitrant voters to the polls as needed on Tuesday.

Hopefully similar campaigns to the Colorado 96-Hour Victory Team are organized in Ohio, Florida, Michagan and other key states.

Participating in this effort is MUCH MORE IMPACTFUL at this stage than any other effort an idividual can make beyond voting.

Don't wake up on November 3rd, wishing you had done more to ensure the election of representatives who are close to your own personal ideals.

I agree with you. I work full time - and I'm a mother also - and am moving to anothe state, but I'm going to the headquarters today for a while and on Tuesday. I told someone yesterday I hope that I am as active as the Republican Women's clubs when I get to be about 55.

I live in District one (Green Valley Ranch area) and I volunteered through the 96Hour website a week ago. Selected the "Drive people to Polls" and "Work at Polling Place" options.

I haven't heard anything from you guys via email or phone.

What the hell is this all about? Clinton did not create any such plan. The Reps have been doing this, and I suspect the dims also, since the beginning of time. Hasn’t the Denver Post ever heard of the Republican Victory Squad that has been around since before Goldwater?

Regardless of who created it, we need to get off our collective duffs, get organized and get out the vote.

I was encouraged to see people of all ages, races, men, women, various economic circumstances working for the cause.

Good for you both volunteering your time and energy for such a critical election.

And I like the catchy slogan on the T-shirts. :-)
