Early voting probe started

A handful of Shannon County residents appear to have cast more than one ballot in South Dakota's first general election in which unrestricted early voting is allowed.

Fall River County State's Attorney Lance Russell said he is in the early stages of an investigation of multiple ballots cast by fewer than 10 voters.

"We do have a few people who have voted more than once," Russell said. "I have asked the auditor's office to put those in a pile. It is my intention to investigate it."

Shannon County, encompassed by Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, contracts for services with Fall River County, its neighbor to the west. Russell said he will have to turn the information over to federal investigators.

Russell said he could not release details about what information appears on the absentee ballots or related documents or about how the situation was detected.

South Dakota Secretary of State Chris Nelson said he was aware of the situation but could not say how the ballots in question might be handled as part of the election on Tuesday, Nov. 2.

"I've got to know the facts first," Nelson said.

Good to put this on record now to scare off some of the Dems from multiple voting.

What's the penalty for purposeful vote fraud? You know AR?

He should have talked to kerry before kerry conspired with cbs and the nytimes.

But that requires the MSM to actually publicize it.

With all of our technology, why can't we pull off clean elections? How about no early voting and indelible ink on the thumb? Heck just as well raise the age of eligibility to 20 too. These young people haven't a clue by and large. And I'm not so old that I should be saying that.

Shannon County went big time for the Democrat in the 2002 senate race. Johnson received 2,856 votes and Thune received 248 in that county. And, as you remember, Thune lost the senate race by 527 votes.

Every single voting irregularity, question , snafu in SD always seems to start with the words "In Shannon County"

Daschle is deeply saddened by this loss of 10 votes. I hope he loses by 9.

It's WAY past time for FEDERAL standards (including picture ID) for FEDERAL elections, including a cross-checking data base. We may have only one more chance to put it in place, if ever. Write your congress critter.

That many votes, huh? I seem to recall Shannon county having only about 520 people, on a good day.

My 18 year old first time voter probably has more sense than most 30, 40, 50 60 or 70 year old voters. He voted for President Bush after reading and watching different points of view about both candidates and their issues. Just because all we hear from the MSM is how all these kids are Michael Moore sycophant followers doesn't make it true!! There are probably more 18 to 25 year old voters who believe in the Rep party and are voting for Pres. Bush than DEm kids voting for Kerry. Don't ever believe MSM bull about our wonderful young men and women being brain dead idiots that do nothing more than do drugs, drink, party, protest the war,and never wash. There is a whole new generation of kids out here that are going to make this country and her people very very proud one day!!!
I am a mom and I approve this message.

I think all DEMOCRATS caught in voter fraud should pay the price. and make it a high price

Bush voters should get a second chance, because they haven't had as much practice

In general, I'll hold to my position. Of course there are exceptions. But they just plain do not have enough of a comprehension of history and humanity to make good political choices as a whole. I am around college-age folks and I see it all the time. There's got to be a cutoff age and I say it should be raised. Maybe you think it should be 17?

South Dakota does require an ID to vote now. That bill was quietly passed after the last senate race. I would like to know more details about how they tried to get away with multiple votes, did they have multiple ID's?
