Impact Of Tape On Race Is Uncertain
Washington Post ^ | October 30, 2004 | Dana Milbank with Charles Babington and Jim VandeHei and political researcher Brian Faler

Clearly, the bin Laden cameo in the 2004 presidential race has the potential to cut both ways. Weighing in Bush's favor is that Americans have typically rallied around the president when they have felt threatened, and bin Laden's tape is menacing. Also, the fact that bin Laden was making his presence known through a videotape rather than through a Madrid-style attack could be seen as evidence that Bush had done his job of protecting the public.

.....This time, it was Kerry's side urging television networks to be cautious in playing the tape.

"If you've got Osama back on the scene talking about 9/11 but not making an attack, it could be the best of both worlds" for Bush, said Republican strategist Jeff Bell. "It's good for Bush, the fact that [bin Laden] hasn't been able to attack, except for verbally."

Kerry aides appeared visibly alarmed aboard the candidate's plane as they planned a response to the tape's airing. One prominent Democrat speculated that for swing voters who have not followed the election closely, bin Laden's reappearance may well boost Bush.

.... the bin Laden appearance may reinforce some of Kerry's arguments. Bin Laden practically quoted Kerry when he said "Bush is still deceiving you and hiding the truth from you," and he seemed to be familiar with the liberal filmmaker Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" and its mockery of Bush for reading "My Pet Goat" with children while the World Trade Center towers burned....

....Mike McCurry appeared unusually somber as he told reporters that the candidate would proceed with the campaign as if the tape had not appeared. "It's very important for us to move forward. ...

Well it is just the remake of Fahrenheit 911 with a tall skinny guy playing the part of the short fat guy.

There is nothing -- I repeat, nothing -- uncertain about the impact of this tape on the election. Everyone knows what the impact is going to be. Even the Kerry people.

It is amazing to hear the DNC talking points translated from Arabic and spoken in all seriousness by one of the most ruthless murderers ever.

Well, if this is true. Shouldn't those wonderful polls start showing it?

I will say this and I don't care who says OMG. The leftists are looking for and October surprise, any, even so much that it may be a terrorist threat on a tape or a terrorist attack on America. You know I speak the truth.

They will. Remember, tracking polls take 2-3 days to show the full impact.

What will be interesting is Bush does better in the weekday polling (going up to as much as 6+), while Kerry does better at the weekend polling (almost catching Bush).

Has to do with who is home on weekends, etc (for example, Repubs are twice as likely to be in Church on Sunday morning, so the random calling catches more Rats than Repubs on Sunday).

I would expect to see the polls tighten in teh next two days, then Monday swing back to Bush.

We've only got 3 days of polling left. Probably not enough time to see it reflect in the polls. I think what happens though is that when people vote they think twice on who should be president in these turbulent times and I think some of those people will break for Bush. We won't know until election day. A state like New Jersey could tip Bush's way just because of their proximity to 9/11.

Now why in the world would you say that? Just because I'm a little down and might need some encouragement. Didn't know that Freerepublic was for the perfect only. I just hate all the polls........but gee I hate to not be welcome here.

I though it was extreme bad of Kerry to make a statement before the President.

But, hey! That's the kind of man Kerry is.

Kerry's quotes being used by UBL proves that once again Monsieur Kerry has given aid and comfort to the enemy.
(Michael Moore is in that category too)
