An economic incentives package intended to lure a Dell computer assembly plant to the Triad was shaping up Thursday to be one of the state's biggest ever. Legislators said the package, which still was being negotiated, could be worth up to $200 million over the next 20 years, surpassing most other efforts to bring jobs to North Carolina.
Dell, a maker of personal computers based in Round Rock, Texas, is shopping for a site on the East Coast to put a 2,000-worker plant. Gov. Mike Easley has called a special legislative session for next week hoping to close a deal that's been in the works for at least five months.
But some technology companies already doing business in North Carolina urged legislators to exercise caution, suggesting that the state runs the risk of angering corporate citizens with a package that may be regarded as overly generous. One such company, IBM, competes with Dell for personal computer sales.

As the Russians say, or used to say, "this is Spectikal," designed for pre-election consumption.
How about just using Golden Leaf (one of the three Tobacco Settlement fund Easley is about to crack to pay for this deal, after insisting he couldn't and wouldn't tamper with the court settlement agreement - see HERE.) to buy Dell notebooks for the school kids living in Tobacco affected communities.
So odd to call a Special Session two days after an election, with a lame duck legislature, to pass another incentives package. All those politicians and the voters will be too wiped out to put up much of a fight, and, it would be pretty hard to do something further away from the next election.
Something stinketh in Denmark, NC.

I'm torn. I want my brother to get out of Austin, but not like this!

The Tobacco Settlement money was supposed to go for health care for people who are uninsured, for prescription drugs and for sick kids. This money was not supposed to be used to fund a computer corporation or for golf courses and race tracks. This is rediculous!
Once again, the liberals in Raleigh take money from us poor Westerners to line their pockets.
Easley also stole money from a fund designated for water/sewage system improvements to buy a park near Hendersonville.
You got that right. The state ends at Old Fort as far as Raleigh is concerned.
