Page A-2: Tape With Terror Threat Is Broadcast
Washington Post ^ | October 29, 2004 | Howard Kurtz

Posted on 10/28/2004 11:10:29 PM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

ABC News aired a videotape last night of a purported American member of al Qaeda declaring that a new series of terrorist attacks against the United States could come "at any moment."

The network, which has held the tape since Monday while it tried to authenticate it, acted after being told by the CIA that the video bears "all the trademarks of an al Qaeda production," as reporter Brian Ross explained. Federal investigators do not know the identity of the man on the tape, but copies are going to 13 current and former officials named during the 75-minute video.

Officials have been unable to match the speaker's voice to any known al Qaeda supporter or sympathizer.

The speaker, face obscured by a headdress and identified only as "Azzam the American," says on the videotape: "No, my fellow countrymen, you are guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty. You are as guilty as Bush and Cheney. You're as guilty as Rumsfeld and Ashcroft and Powell."

The man continued: "After decades of American tyranny and oppression, now it's your turn to die. Allah willing, the streets of America will run red with blood, matching drop for drop the blood of America's victims." The man speaks in accented English, pronouncing, for example, "tyranny" as "tie-ranny."

He also makes references to comedian Bill Maher, who once said that suicide attackers were less cowardly than long-distance cruise missile launchers, and Sept. 11 commission Chairman Thomas H. Kean (R). The man also criticizes Muslims who have lost their faith. "September 11 was but the opening salvo of the global war on America," he says.

The N.Y. Times, CBS, the U.N. and terrorists all want to sway our national election by working for Kerry's election and Bush's defeat.

And I hope they all lose big on november 2nd.

Just think what it would mean.

All those forces working against the President for the past 3 years, and it's all for nothing.

Al Quaeda's got nuthin'. They obviously have no fangs right now or they would bomb first and make threats afterward like they did in Spain. This is a toothless warning. But watch the lefties get worked up over it.

ABC executives were frustrated that after holding the tape and working closely with federal officials to authenticate it, Fox News obtained and aired a copy about 20 minutes before it was shown on Peter Jennings's newscast last night.

LOL. They never would have showed it until after the election unless fox had busted their chops.

That will be so sweet. I swear I can't even sit in the same room with some of the deluded leftists I've known for years. Before their views were innocuous enough but now I see them as a direct threat to my country.

Wow, I tell you. These Al-Queda folks are really, really good. I mean, heck, all those African bombings before Bush even won office, all to punish us for what we would do in the future. Really amazing, I tell ya.

I think I'm going to avoid any 'target rich' environments until after the election is done, and possibly longer than that. Luckily for me, I've been working virtually every day from sunrise to sunset, so I don't have to restrain myself too greatly.

I barely talk to my parents. I told my mother I may not talk to her until after the election.

I'm sorry, my gut tells me this is a phoney tape and I bet someone at ABC filmed it... I would LOVE if it could be proven before Monday..

The complete video should be posted on the internet for everyone to see. The public has a right to know.

The Johnson family includes, from left, Tia and Kathe, John F. Kerry supporters, and Frieda Pulkowski and Dennis, for George W. Bush. (Al Hoch -- Janesville Gazette)

Politically Split Family Is a Microcosm of Wisconsin***..."Everything I stand for lines up with Bush," Frieda said this week. "And everything they stand for lines up with Kerry. I don't really see how it could get more polarized, do you?"

Kathe, who was sitting next to Frieda, smiled at her daughter. "Honey, I love you, but Bush is an idiot."

....Beloit, home to the Johnson family, lies on a rolling plain just north of Illinois. It has a sausage factory and a Frito Lay plant, and about an 8 percent unemployment rate, above the state average. Unions put election troops on the street, and the city edges Democratic. The father, Dennis, was an African American serviceman who grew up a foster child. He married Kathe, a young white woman from a North Dakota family so poor that they melted snow for water in the winter. The couple is divorced but remains friendly.

Two of their three daughters live in Beloit. The third and youngest daughter, Kati Johnson, lives in New York, and she waved a placard of protest at the Republican National Convention this summer.

"I believe we'll be a safer and more humane country with Kerry, and I haven't given up convincing my father," said Tia, the 35-year-old middle daughter, who is a scientist and has two children. "I send him pages from the 9/11 commission report so he'll realize how deep the Bush family ties go to the Saudis."

Later that evening, at a restaurant in Janesville, Dennis -- a good-looking man with hair gone white -- smiles and puts his palms up. "We raised these girls to speak their minds," he said. "And God love them, that's what they do."

So what accounts for the taproot of personal politics? Kathe recalls hearing her parents worry they could not pay for a funeral for her deathly ill younger brother. She is a lifelong liberal. Dennis is a self-made man who believes the presidency is about leadership and making tough decisions. Reagan turned him Republican; he likes a strut in a leader's step.

Ask Frieda, 38, who is director of an assisted-living home, and she says conservatism just felt right. She is a born-again Christian, and she believes in low taxes and a strong military. "Let me get in the first punch," Frieda said as she sat across from her mother. "We're bleeding to death from taxes. I'm a security mom. I think Bush will keep my kids from being massacred at school or day care." ....***

No kidding, I thought it was a Halloween joke when I saw it. I'm laughing at it and than they say it has been authenticated! I still think it's a joke!

There really are two Americas.

And John Edwards doesn't live in either one of them...

Actually, he does.

Kerry/Edwards live in the pro-UN, anti-U.S. America.

Bush/Cheney live in the pro-military, U.S. America

They may have found the "scarf" in Pakistan. But the glasses? Looked to me like he's reading from a monitor. i have antena about these things and 1) it's just not the same as other tapes and 2)they always give their tapes to Al jezerra... this is an ABC, poorly-done, attempt to scare people into voting for kerry.

Don't think for a second that they'll stop. They will try to turn public sentiment against Iraq and the WOT in general.

They'll move on towards attempted impeachment. But at least for a week or two, they'll be in complete shock wondering how the rest of the country could be so 'stupid' to re-elect GWB.
