Questions::

Dear NKzone,

I'm doing a social studies project for social studies and my question is: How does communism in North Korea compare to that of China? If you could answer a few questions for me, I'd greatly appreciate it.

1)Is the North korean government strict? If so, how?

2) What are some laws that prohibit people from doing certain actions?; What are some things the North Korean government has made illegal that would be legal in most other countries?

3) Do you think the North Koreans are happy living in North Korea?

4) Has there ever been a protest in North Korea against the government?If so what were they about and why?

5) Why has North Korea isolated itself so much from the rest of the world?

6) What do you think the future holds for North Korea?

7)What are some punishments for disobeying the laws?

8.) Who is the current government leader and how does he rule the country?

Thank you so much for your time and if you'd reply i'd be very grateful.

Sincerely,
Zulaikha and Marisha

Answers::

Dear Zulaikha and Marisha,

I'm glad to hear of your interest in North Korea and the people living there. I am 24 years old and I lived in North Korea until 1997. And I came to South Korea in 2003. I am a defector. And I will try to answer your questions.

1. Yes, The government is strict in ALL aspects of the peoples lives. There is no personal freedom. And all land is owned by the government. You are told where you will work and where you will go to school. You may not even discuss anything about the government or freedom. You must attend weekly self-criticism sessions, where you must criticize yourself and your schoolmates.

2.There are many things: You may not travel outside your city or village without permission. You may have any contact with any foreigners. You may not have foreign currency. You may not say anything bad about the Government or Kim Jong Il. In my village an old woman who couldn't see well used a newspaper to cover food on the dinner table. The front page of the newspaper had a picture of Kim Jong Il. A neighbor reported her to the authorities and she was arrested that night and taken to a concentration camp. Her family told us that she died thee 3 months later. It is also illegal to leave N.K. as you are then a traitor to your country. My brother was arrested in China and sent back to N.K. and was executed.

3. None of the North Koreans are happy there. They are starving. That is why my brother and I left our home.

4.There have been several uprisings by both civilians and the military. One in 1996 by the military caused a purge of the officer's corps where several thousand military officers were executed. Also, several hundred civilians were killed when they defied authorities in 2000 in Hamkyung Province.

5.They have isolated the country so that its citizens cannot see how the rest of the world is living. they told us that Americans eat out of trash bins and that many cannot go to school because they don't have money. But, every child in N.K. can go to school. If the people found out how the rest of the world lives, they would overthrow the government.

6. We hope fot the end of the dictator Kim Jong Il. We hope that we can be reunited with our families. I want so much to see my father and mother again. But, we don't know what will happen.

7.For even speaking bad about the Government or Kim Jong Il you will be sent to a Political Prison Camp. No one ever leaves there alive. You will work and suffer there for the rest of your life. Minor things like stealing food usually get sentences of 1-3 years in a work camp.

8. The current leader is Kim Jong Il. He is an evil dictator who lives like a king, while the people suffer and starve. Over 3 million people have died of starvation there since 1995. i saw many dead people in the streets. And some of my schoolmates in High School died of starvation.

I left N.K. because I saw no future there for me. It is the worst place on this planet. Please tell this to your classmates as everyone should know about the hell that is happening in North Korea.

Thank you,

Jenny Huang

In answering question 4, the first one Jenny refers to must be a coup attempt by 6th Corps.

Of course, they use the trees to make turn paper.

RE #3

Most of senior officers of 6th Corps and some high ranking officials in N. HamKyung Province, where 6th Corps was stationed, were planning the coup. They completed a detailed plan of troop deployments for this. In essence, they assembled a big anti-regime organization there. They even contacted S. Korean government at the time. S. Korean Pres. Kim Young-sam agreed to cooperate if the coup breaks out.

However, it was uncovered by either a security agent or a newly arrived Corps commander.

After a wave of massive arrest, 6th Corps was pulled out and 7th Corps took its place. It created a huge traffic jam, according to an eye witness report.

The coup attempt by 6th Corps in '96 and Ryongchon Explosion in last April were two huge missed Opportunities.
