Welcome. The reason we use RAT is because of the RATS. There was a commercial used during the last election cycle in which RAT stood out in the word DemocRAT. It was on the screen for a fraction of a second, but the RATS claimed foul and said it was subliminal advertising by the GOP. They used to be Dems. From then on, it has been RATS. They deserve it.
He made an interesting point and I think I clarified it in my answer.

If you are going to stay around, you should get used to it. It started on free republic after the dems went nuts about the republican ad a few years ago that supposedly had subliminal messages in it--the word 'bureaucrats' lingered on screen and the portion of the word 'rats' was there a little longer than the rest of the word. The dems were certain that this hidden message was doing something or the other and that whatever it was doing was evil. Their hysteria was, for lack of a better word, funny.
So we started calling them 'rats.' I regard it as a joke and I think pretty much everyone else does too. Also, it's easier to type than 'democrats,' and more descriptive.
Anyway, welcome to FR.

Also, it might be prudent to include Madeline Albright -- for she, more than most in the list, did grave disservice to our Republic. This woman was a classic "One Worlder" who was probably the most deceitful, inept, incompetent and morally bankrupt woman ever to be flagged for National Service in any responsible position.
Others may have said this, but the term rat is from the contoversy in 2000 where the media claimed that there was a subliminal message in a campaign ad focusining on the RAT in democRAT.
