MUSCATINE, Iowa - Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards (news - web sites) accused the Bush administration on Thursday of ignoring problems ranging from scarce flu vaccine to the war in Iraq (news - web sites) while officials campaign in battleground states and asked, "Who's minding the store?"
Edwards, speaking in a high school gymnasium during a bus tour of eastern Iowa, cited national security adviser Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites), Health and Human Services (news - web sites) Secretary Tommy Thompson and Commerce Secretary Donald Evans as examples of Bush officials who are campaigning while pressing issues remain unresolved.
"There's a solution for this," Edwards said. "In America, that's called an election."
Edwards focused on pocketbook issues, particularly jobs, in hopes of energizing Democratic voters in a state where the election is far too close to call. New statistics show the state's jobless rate rose from 4.5 percent in August to 4.7 percent in September, the third straight monthly increase.
Edwards said Iowa has lost 25,900 jobs during President Bush (news - web sites)'s tenure.
"George Bush (news - web sites) is never going to make this better," Edwards said. "Again this month, unemployment went up, but they think all of this is a myth."
Treasury Secretary John Snow characterized reports of net job losses under Bush a "myth" when visiting Ohio earlier this month.
"George Bush and Dick Cheney (news - web sites) are completely out of touch with what's happening in the real world," Edwards said.
Gene Sperling, an economic adviser to Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites)'s presidential campaign, said the numbers in Iowa could have been worse had there not been 2,600 fewer people in the work force. He contended that many Iowans have given up looking for jobs.
Sperling said job creation has been at "an extremely weak and anemic level" in recent months and predicted it would take years to recover the jobs lost under Bush.
Voting is under way in Iowa, with absentee ballots in the mail and satellite voting sites set up in most of Iowa's 99 counties. Iowa went Democratic in 2000 but by barely 4,000 votes. Both parties have targeted its seven electoral votes in this election.
It's a metrosexual thang. :-)
This complaint, from the guy who is running with a senator who missed a year's worth of intelligence briefings? More predictable hypocrisy.
"There's a solution for this," Edwards said. "In America, that's called an election."
Edwards continued, "And if that fails, we'll just sue ourselves into office."
No talk of the flu vaccine from the Kerry scampaign until after the third debate. It must have tested well in phone polls.
Photo prop to show that they "care" about cancer.
Brother John, there isn't a soul in this country except on the rabid Left that believes G.W. isn't running himself ragged performing his duties as President, Husband, Father and campaigner.
Tell me, sir, the same can be said of you and Kerry.
Both Kerry and Edwards have been wearing the braceletsall year since the Tur'De FRance
They are American Cancer Society/Lance Armstrong solidarity bracelets.
Why isn't this empty suit getting the same treatment Dan Quayle got in past elections. Edwards is unambiguously unqualified to be VP, let alone POTUS. I recall the press constantly asking Quayle 'what made him think he was qualified.' It was a fair question then, it's a fair question now, but everyone is giving Edwards a free ride.
The Edwards PrimperGate video was a good start to exposing this fraud. Few people seem to be following up. Edwards is the best argument for dems. to vote either bush or nader.
I have to be careful and make sure not to compare Edwards to Quayle.. There is NO comparison.
Quayle actually was a Vice President and the nation survived him and even Clitooon and eGore.
I'm not so sure about a Kerry/Edwards administration.
God help us if Edwards was ever allowed a forum to pump his sludge from on our dime or Kerry had a chance to sell us out to the EU/UN crowd..
Clintoon :-}
Ah. Okay.
John Edwards, on the overhand, is a con artist.
He collected millions of dollars by manipulating the legal system to terrorize his victims.
Now Edwards is wearing the bracelet too. And Taserer Heinz is wearing one lately. Hmmmmmmm...
I am SO glad that on November 2nd the President will be reelected and that Richard Burr will fill the Senate seat that this POS supposedly occupied for 6 years.
Edwards makes it embarrasing to live in NC.
skerry and breck girl haven't been in to their day jobs in months.........
What's he care anyway as long as he has his comb, hairspray and mirrored compact.
