Scientists, economists oppose Bush plan on forests

By MATTHEW DALY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON - More than 125 scientists, including chimpanzee expert Jane Goodall and biologist Edward O. Wilson, have a signed a letter opposing the Bush administration's plan to reverse a Clinton-era ban on road building and logging in 58 million acres of remote national forests.

And in a separate letter, more than 110 economists, including Nobel laureate Kenneth Arrow, also oppose the plan, which would require governors to petition the federal government to block road-building in about a third of national forests where it is now prohibited.

Groups circulating the letters say they show widespread opposition to the administration's forest policies in the scientific and economic communities.

The scientists' letter was circulated in recent weeks through the Internet and e-mail. In all, 127 scientists from 30 states signed the six-page document, which was submitted to the Forest Service this week.

"A strong roadless conservation rule is one of the cornerstones to sustainable public lands management, biodiversity conservation and ecosystem health of the national forests," the letter says. "Therefore we request that you reinstate the 2001 Roadless Conservation Rule that received very thoughtful input by scientists and the public."

Heidi Valetkevitch, a spokeswoman for the Forest Service, said the agency welcomed the letters, as it does all public comments on the forest proposal. The administration has said it will accept comments through Nov. 15 before making a final decision.

"We look forward to reviewing these particular letters, as well as the thousands of other comments we have received," Valetkevitch said. "We are committed to maintaining the character of designated roadless areas and protecting and managing roadless values."

"...58 million acres of remote national forests."

These are national forest, not national parks. People seem to not understand the simply fact that trees are a crop and national "forests" were set up to provide for those crops...nothing more.

Friggin' "roadless area conservation initiative."

That abortion should never have seen the light of day.

The Nitwit factor is HUGE among "experts"...
Two halfwits might make one scientist.. so, divide all the numbers in half.. reduce that by 50 percent for the democrat factor and factor in a 80 percent margin of error and what you end up with is a coupla opinions over a game of pool.. by two midgets..

This has a long history. They did RARE I and II and that was supposed to be it, period. Then Clinton, in his last hours, came up with this new proposal for more "Roadless Areas." I remember attending the hearings and our local Forest knew such little detail over the rushed proposal that it couldn't even tell us where they were proposed to be. When they finaly came out, they weren't true "roadless" areas and had been gerrymandered to fit on either sides of roads and ignore roads and all sorts of contrived configurations.

In an area already exposed to severe fire conditions, the "roadless" rule was insane. It cut off wide areas from access.

Any homes or condos or co-ops that contain any wood these jerks own or live in should be confiscated and they can all live in some 3rd world jungle paradise.

Ditto for their vehicles.

President GW Bush drives a propane fuel converted Ford PU and has a Texas stone-walled ranchhouse to take advantage of passive solar heating.

He also has a deep well recirculated water heat pump for heating and cooling, recyles and filters his house "grey water" into sumps for irrigating grass and plants and trees and planted grass that is enviro-friendly.

Ranchers and farmers and miners and fisherman and forestry folks are the true environmental stewards of our world and liberals and radical fakeroo ENVIRO-NUTZIES use their lumber, veggies, meat, fuels, vehicles every day and cannot survive without them.

What has John Kerry done in his many mega-million dollar Heinz-57 mansions?

Take a good look:

Last week there was a large fire that burnt out of control for about a week around in an isolated area about two North of the San Francisco area.

My wife talked to a lady/rancher whose ranch was severely burned during the fire.

1. First of all the road closure and anti brush clearing the past decade set up the conditions.

2. Then apparenly Fish and Game stopped the land owners from clearing the brush along deer trails a few years ago.

So when the fire started, it exploded with all the old brush and followed the brush ladened deer trails. The lady and her family watched the fire roar up these trails out of control and then spread to the areas around the trails.

The lady's home and barns were saved as they had set up a green belt around them. They got their cattle down safely.

However their winter grazing areas were burnt off, and the cattle have no grass to feed on this winter. She is in the process of getting a loan to buy hay to feed their cattle this winter.

The deer in this area are over populated, and they are like rats, not some rare endangered species. California Fish and Game like most Fish and Game departments across the nation are controlled by enviral whackos practicing worship of brush and worthless creatures.

Yet another well told story of stupid EnvironMental-GovernMentalistas and their "preservation" practices through phony CONservation thru CONservancies!!!

Merely a preview of coming attractions in StarMan Schwarzenegger's Sierra-Nevada CONservancy!!!

Fish & Game, thru their bond funded Wildlife CONservation Board will soon be buying up CONservation "easements" from private owners, intimidated into "willing sellers" by NGO CONservancies, all along the "western slope" that is now the "slipery slope!"

The "Conservationists" WOULD RATHER SEE THE FOREST BURNED by Wild Fires, than have roads, and thinning of dead trees to stop the fires.
