Malaysia's controversial former prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad, has urged Muslim voters in the U.S. to support Sen. John F. Kerry "in the name of Islam" in next month's election.
Mahathir, whose retirement last year came amid a row over comments deemed anti-Semitic, said in an open letter to American Muslims that President Bush had been "the cause of the tragedies" across the Muslim world.
The letter, dated Oct. 15, said Kerry may not be much better, "but we have a duty to ensure that Bush will not be able to determine our fate for four more years."
Mahathir accused Bush of being "the cause of the tragedies in Afghanistan, Palestine and Iraq."
"There is an obvious connection between the sufferings of the Muslims and the policies and thinking of Bush."
Mahathir, who ruled Malaysia for 22 years, was for many years a strident critic of the West.
Last October, shortly before he retired, he received a standing ovation from the leaders of Islamic countries after a speech in which he charged that Jews "rule this world by proxy" and urged Muslims to use their brains as well as their brawn to fight the Jews.
The address drew strong condemnation from some Western governments, while Mahathir said the response merely proved his point about Jewish influence.
His open letter notwithstanding, Mahathir does not believe Kerry will win.
In an interview with Malaysia's Star newspaper, published Tuesday, he said American voters were "by and large, very ignorant and know nothing about the rest of the world," and seemed ready to "elect a liar as their president."
Asked whether he though Bush would win, Mahathir said: "Yes, I think so."
Last March, Mahathir was first quoted as favoring Kerry over Bush, saying the Democrat "would be much more willing to listen to the voices of people and of the rest of the world."
The Kerry campaign quickly rejected the endorsement.
"John Kerry rejects any association with former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed, an avowed anti-Semite whose views are totally deplorable," said foreign policy adviser Rand Beers.

The sufferings of muslims comes from generations of obeying the tenets of a religion based on ignorance, and the leaders who perpetrate that ignorance.
Bush gave the muslims a way out, and if they don't use it then they have only themselves to blame. But, then, do muslims ever blame themselves for their own stupidy?
