Top GOPers in 'Major Effort' to Uncover Kerry's Naval Discharge
Top Republicans in Washington are trying to determine whether or not John Kerry received an honorable discharge from the Navy, the reporter who's taken the lead in probing Kerry's naval records said Sunday.

They say that the only situation where they would be re-issued would be where they had been taken away previously due to not having an honorable discharge.

sKerry had all of his medals reinstated on the same day in the 80s or 90s. A military friend of mine said that he believed a general discharge (rather than an honorable discharge) would still have left him with his medals. So if he needed to have his medals reinstated, he probably had an other-than-honorable discharge or a dishonorable discharge.

Not necessarily I think. And remember that Kerry's medals were re-awarded after he "threw them over the wall" and were re-issued all on the same day. There are different sorts of discharges, honorable, general, diahonorable. After Jimmy Carter was elected one of the first thing he did was give amnesty for all draft dodgers and that got extended to a re-consideration of less than honorable discharges for those who perhaps got general discharges for one reason or another. I'ts speculated that this was the situation with Kerry, that he actually had a less than honorable discharge initially that got upgraded after Carters directive.
Freepers with more military knowlege than me could give many other details but this is what I've been able to glean after reading these Lipscomb articles and threads.

The very real possibility that Kerry has something like this hidden in his record finally makes perfect sense of the very early hit on Bush (even before the campaign was underway) in which they beat a dead horse for all those months trying to find ANYTHING that would stain Dubya's National Guard service.
It seemed kind of stupid and senseless at the time, but Kerry obviously knew he needed insurance against this coming out.
